Dr. EDIT made a BIG mistake Empty Dr. EDIT made a BIG mistake

Post by joyfull on Thu Feb 18, 2016 3:41 pm

A dear friend and neighbor had cataract surgery by Dr. EDIT, a well known Opthomologist & retina specialist here in Ajijic 3 weeks ago. He has performed this surgery successfully many times in friends and acquaintances. The day after the surgery my friend went back for a recheck. He told her he had put the wrong lense in and she needed to come to Guadalajara that same afternoon to replace it with the correct lense. He then did the surgery and put in a new lense. Because it was so soon after the first surgery he had to put 3 stitches in. My friend said it felt like barbed wire in her eye for the next 10 days. She is now 3 weeks out and her vision is so blurry she cannot read and can barely watch TV. She is not comfortable going anywhere unfamiliar as she cannot see well enough. She has now gone to Guadalajara for a 2nd opinion by a well known Opthomologist. His exact words were " Dr. EDIT certainly didn't do his best work on you. He never should have attempted to replace the lense the next day after the original surgery as there was already trauma to the eye." It will be at least 3 months until we know if there is permanent damage.
The reason I am posting this is that my friend who is a very caring and loving individual attempted to come to a win win with Dr. EDIT. He told her he would not refund any money to her, but maybe could discount her 2nd eye.
He told her that her eye had some trauma and she would be fine in a few months. He couldn't wait to get her out of his office. My friend said the thing that bothers her most is that he has never apologized for his mistake. She not on the weboards, but agreed the story needs to be told.

If a person is going to make public a Dr's name in a situation like this, then they should disclose their own name as well.  ALL the cards should be face up as it is serious business. What is there to hide if it is the truth.

There is no doctor in this whole town that someone doesn't have a bad story about. Unfortunately, they too are human and make mistakes. I feel bad for the friend because she was the one it happened to, but to attempt to trash someone's professional reputation over one mistake ( albeit a serious one ) seems wrong to me. I may be wrong, but it sounds as if refunding the money was what the lady calls a "win-win" and if he had done that she would not have spread the story.

Unfortunately the editing only works within 15 minutes of a post.

I used this Dr. With fabulous results....way beyond what I expected. I'm so sorry it wasn't the same for your friend. I still recommend him.

We would all like to believe that doctors are like robots programmed to perform perfectly every time. They are, however, human and not one of them can have a 100% success rate.
That is small comfort to the patient on whom a mistake was made. Still, when we choose a doctor, we look for the one with a high rate of success, near perfect. We do not want a doctor of whom we hear multiple mistakes or shady dealings that sound disturbingly familiar. That is not true of this doctor.

This doctor took care of a friend and brilliantly solved a serious problem that had been bothering him for months and no other doctor had been able to cure. It was amazing.

OTOH I went to see him for new glasses and while having our appt/consult he finished a cup of espresso and was delivered another one. He then picked up my glasses, tweaked them around in his hands, and broke them in half.

Of course he had them glued back together and offered a few discounts on my new pairs that I'm not sure ever materialized or not.

I know another of his patients who is having severe complications from one of his procedures. She has been totally blind and in pain for over a week now. He says it will clear up. Procedure was at the end of a week and the doctor was unavailable (wouldn't answer his phone) all weekend.

Really makes you wonder if indeed the issues these two people are having will really clear up. OR are they being told what this Doctor thinks they want to hear (the Mexican way).

Since I didn't PM to find out, I don't know who this doctor is, but I've heard praises and condemnations about every doctor of any kind in this area.
If people have a good outcome, they don't post to tell the world about it, but if something didn't go well.........we hear about it.

I went to an opthomologist who was highly recommended by another doctor whose vision was saved by him. I was scared stupid at the thought of having eye surgery, of course.

As it happens, I have a rare (2%) condition that resulted in things getting complicated. In the end, all was well, but if I based the reputation of the doctor on what was, essentially, my own deviation from the norm....it wouldn't be fair. He probably has a 98% success rate. We seldom know all the facts in these cases.
