Re: Trouble at the airport
I really want to know what Ejido means? Is it a neighbourhood? A community? A tribe?

Re: Trouble at the airport
Big thing for us (foreign folks ) to know is don't buy Ejido land ever, no matter what. Its basically a title nightmare. Ask the airport laugh out loud.

But beware, you might buy land that used to be Ejido land or where neighboring land is ejido and you may still have problems so check your title and property history. Real Estate Agents and Notaries may say dont worry, but will they indemnify you?

Re: Trouble at the airport
Protesters in Chapala blocked the intersection today and traffic backed up all the way to Ajijic. My husband had to close his business for the rest of the day because all of his appointments cancelled.

I'm not really sure. It has something to do with the merchants that want to sell stuff on the plaza.

Re: Trouble at the airport
Local government (it started with the last administration) has been trying to get the plaza merchants in Ajijic to pay a square meter charge. I imagine they are messing with the merchants at the square in Chapala also but I don't know for sure about stuff in Chapala.

Re: Trouble at the airport
Yes, it involves this charge that the government has imposed on the vendedores ambulantes. These merchants say the charge is unconstitutional and they have the right to sell stuff wherever they want.
The merchants, as they prefer to call themselves, do not have the support of the general population behind them and mucho menos when they block the intersection into Chapala, ruining everyone else's business day. Traffic was backed up all the way to Ajijic so everyone on the carretera suffered as well. Taking the bus to work or home? Forget about that too.
Their complaint is with the government of Chapala, not with its citizens and even though they did not make any new friends yesterday, el presidente did eventually send someone out to invite a few of them in to talk to him and the group of 30 or 40 protesters moved aside. Maybe that was their goal? To get an audience with the president? Popular opinion is that he needs to deal with this issue, a thing he has sucked at so far.

Re: Trouble at the airport
The merchants that sell to the east of chapala pier want the director of markets removed from her position. They claim she is abusing her power.
Re: Trouble at the airport
That is the claim you hear over and over where there are markets..That job has to be the worst because there is no way to keep all the merchants happy and you always hear stories about preferential treatments of certain groups , corruption , abuse of power etc.. That is the no win position of all times.

Re: Trouble at the airport
I was caught up in that blockade on Saturday. I almost made it to the traffic light before everything closed down. I needed to go to the palacio and then Soriana. Â I had to forget the palacio and turn around and go back a little ways and then drive over the mountain to get to Soriana.
From what I could see it was well organized with people on foot and on horseback.

Re: Trouble at the airport
Too many people have not complied with the law for so long they now feel it is their right to not pay or be subject to regulation. Others paid corrupt government officials bribes of half of what should have been charged so now when the law is applied properly everybody cries foul! Others in power wield it like a big stick to punish the population.
How many vendors can Chapala support? Why dont we invite the groups of window washers, fire breathers and people selling things at the stoplight in front of Costco from Guadalajara to join in the melee? Maybe throw in the immigrants begging with their bedrolls at every street corner doing the hand to mouth motion?

Re: Trouble at the airport
In the meantime, has anyone been to the airport? Has anything there changed?
Re: Trouble at the airport
Hmm,immigrants with bedrolls begging at every street corner?I haven't noticed them but I've only lived here for ten years.Intercasa wrote: Â Why dont we invite the groups of window washers, fire breathers and people selling things at the stoplight in front of Costco from Guadalajara to join in the melee? As far as people selling things at intersections, they don't bother me in the least, everybody has to make a living.
And the window washers,a simple wag of the finger and they move on.

Re: Trouble at the airport
I see the Central Americans at intersections near the railroad tracks on the west side of town. I always give them something. Many years ago in my youth I once found myself in very dire straights through no fault of my own and was given a helping hand. I don't judge these people.

Re: Trouble at the airport
About bribes....
In Ajijic the government representative colected the fees and gave receipts and kept the money so I would not call that bribes. When the governemnt ask for the money the merchants or at least the ones I know showed their receipts..It turns out that the agent was collecting less than the going rate so the rents went up but nothing the merchants coul not afford so there was no problem there . Were the merchants in the same situation or it is a different situation altogether?
I can tell you that the merchants had no idea the agent was keeping the money ad they thought they paid the fees.

Re: Trouble at the airport
Mexico is a country that lacks oportunities for many and many people survive doing little jobs, better than begging. I do not begrudge those people if they are not aggressive and I am the first one to use them if I need their services.
As far as the migranrs are concerned we have a big amount of them in Tuxtla , Chis and I always help them if I can, they have a tough life, many of them get hurt and robbed and are stranded in Chiapas .like Clete I will help them if I can. Yes poverty can be very inconvenient to some.

Well said, Brigitte. Agree. And I also think the merchants thought they were paying the legit price.

Re: Trouble at the airport
Some may be the vendors who were thrown out of the Plaza so it would look pretty because no one would be using it. Just MHO. Rather have the plaza vendors back where they belong and parking on Madero.

Re: Trouble at the airport
Whose idea was it to install them in the parking places closest to the plaza anyway? I liked the vendors in the plaza too. Now it is just a vast empty space. They took out mature trees and seating to create that empty space. I just don't know what they were going for there.

Re: Trouble at the airport
They hae been trying to do that at the mercado de artesanias around the old convent in San Cristobal de las Casas for ever but the vendor are mostly indigenous and not easy going , we end up with riots every time the government trie to move them so now everyone has given up but the idea from city hall was to have an empty plaza so people could see the church and enjoy th eplaza but if the trees are removed in Chapala I am not sure the new plaza is an improvement..May be they have big plans and will put more benches and trees..

Re: Trouble at the airport
Me either and they totally missed it, whatever it was! Whoever thought that remodel up is not in touch with reality. I pretty much feel the same way about that island in front of municipal hall. wtf I've seen a total of 3 people EVER sitting in that 'medial strip' lounge, while I continue to drive around and around looking for a place to park. wtf
