I am pretty sure that the neighbor to which he refers is a very good friend of ours and is a neighbor of Bodie and his captured tourist....whom we've known for years.  Ahhh, the memories!
And yes, this is a true story!!!

The story is so plausible it seems hardly worth writing about. I don't understand the "bovine manure" comment.

I believe it. In rural areas when they're working on R.R. (Ranch Roads) a little good will gets things done. Ditches re cut and cleaned , pot holes fixed. It does happen NOB.

My comment was about how it would be NOB, folks. No doubt that money talks down there.

Have you noticed that the term gringo is only used by them.

Please note that the white enclave of Ajijic is a microcosm and can in no way reflect the country as a whole. You all have made the word gringo common among the populace, but I have never been called a gringo anyplace in Mexico void of the external influence of Americans, the people are not that rude. It is like the N word NOB, used almost exclusively among the black people referring to their brothers and sisters.

Feel free to pile on, gringos.

I agree the Mexican people are not that rude. I tend to hear the term "gringo" used by drunk Mexicans in the bar. Sometimes in a nice way and sometimes not. I have heard it in places other than Ajijic.

Oh please!! That is complete bullshit. I don´t live near the lake, my neighbors are all Mexican, I have been a naturalized Mexican citizen for nearly 40 years and have grown children and a granddaughter all born and raised here.

The term is widely used. Whether they have called you gringo to your face or not proves nothing. The word is prominent in general conversation.

When I lived in Guatemala on Lake Atitlan, an area highly influenced by Americans, I found that the indigenous people absolutely hated to be called Indians. The word Indian translates to Indio in our books, but means rube or hick to them. They always called Americans gringos and say they mean nothing by it.

Once I was talking to the head of public education in San Pedro La Laguna, a Tz'utujil Mayan Indian and he referred to me as a gringo. I asked him why he used such an offensive word and he replied, I mean no malice by it. I then said that it was OK, Indio.

The word indio is deemed offensive in this country also. Besides the meanings you mentioned, it is used widely by Mexicans to denigrate the indigenous.

I have. See my post above.

I say "Hey I'm not a gringo, I'm Canadian". They usually laugh and apologize........ Beer
