If you want to call someone "Indian", there are over a billion in Asia that are not offended at all. There are several Indian restaurants in GDL that have nothing to with Mexican cuisine.  In fact they like being called Indian.  Very Happy
The Spaniards weren't too smart when it came to geography or identifying nationalities.

I think that the error was probably not made by the Spaniards, but by the English misinterpretation of the Spanish word, “indigenes“, which sounds something more ‘indies-related‘ to the English ear, when all it really means is the generic term for anyone, anywhere: Indigenous people.....those who live there.

I was taught that Columbus called the native people he met in his American voyages Indians because he believed he had reached the East Indies. He wasn't where he thought he was.

The people originating from India, and countries there abouts (Pakistan, Sri Lanka, etc., prefer the term "South Asian" - at least in Vancouver, in newspapers and government speak anyways. Calling an Inuit an eskimo, is like calling a Punjabi Sikh a "hindu". Some Punjabis do like being called Sikhs, because not all from this region practise the Sikh religion. Eskimo means something like eaters of raw meat. Maybe this is where multiculturalism is a good thing, people are just trying to figure out who is what - not enough time to develop poisonous hates and bigotry, us and them.

A citizen of India is an Indian.....a citizen of Mexico is a Mexican.
Regional identification does not carry much weight as to who you are, but nationality does.
Sikhs are a religious minority amongst the citizens of India.

I had a somewhat similar situation when I moved into Chapala Haciendas.

I have one of four houses on a horseshoe "street" behind the houses on the main street. My "road" was just dirt and when it rained, it was a mud-mess of holes, etc.

And for good measure, my street is a privada and not even on the map.

Rather than waste my time asking the BOD for the fracc to do something, I ordered out three truckloads of gravel and had it laid down and spread.
This was 5-years ago and never a problem since.

Same for a street light; I figured one was needed for safety, plus, burglars don't like light. So what to do?

Same solution as the muddy street; I put in my own street light and wired it into my house and installed a timer. This was at the same time as my street "fix."

I haven't seen any rise in my electric bill either.

No! I never asked my neighbors (one house was vacant) for any contribution.

And finally, since there was no street sign, I asked and received permission to put up my own street sign at the main street. I now live on "MEMORY ALPHA."

So I also vote for the Mexican way.
