Two pesos here:  Most "newbies" aren't youngsters.  Most of them have lived at least 50 years on the planet, which means they have long ago developed their basic attitudes toward living their lives. Some of those people are flexible; some feel "entitled" and others never change their minds about anything at all.  I've met the flexible ones: they know how to deal with change and alien landscapes.  They will stay.  They also know the difference between useful advice and b.s.

The ones who can't adapt to mayo with lemon in it have a problem that isn't going away.  They'll spend thousands to shop back in the states and they'll do all they can to try to change Mexico to be like back home.  Still others will stay and grouse for the rest of their lives. They would have groused if they had stayed where they were.  Nothing is ever going to be okay, anywhere.

I don't think we can't make assumptions about who will stick it out and who won't.
Maybe that lady with appointments every half hour has mellowed out and does one a day now.  Maybe she fled back to Boston. Maybe she's reading this and having a good laugh.
But yes, es Mexico and have some tequila is good advice when the topes appear.

That Mind Set - Page 3 Empty A few points on the essential issue

Post by 11AS Wed Apr 05, 2017 6:06 pm

As interesting as all the posts are, I would like to bring the conversation back to the real problem exposed by the original post. Foreigners that gripe and do not adapt to local realities, although they may project a bad image, in the end cause harm principally only to themselves. However, when such individuals threaten to take action for their personal comfort to the detriment of a large part of the local population, it is an entirely different matter. The three foreign persons in question, would, at most, amount collectively to no more than 10 individuals in their combined households, all of which do not depend on public transportation for work, school, shopping or recreation. Re-routing that particular bus route (yes, I have a pretty good idea of the exact location) would inconvenience almost 400 people, most of them working class nationals plus a few foreigners of limited means.

Fortunately, as it has been stated in previous posts, there is little chance that such petition would ever succeed. Bus routes are regulated by the government and, even in Mexico, politicians must consider their voter base. Those locals that depend on reasonable access to the bus route, are also the ones that put the current administration in power.

Incidentally, even if by a remote chance they would manage to get the bus re-routed, they would not achieve much reduction in the level of traffic noise, as the current bus route travels through the main thoroughfare out of town. Perhaps they would also want to cordon off the entire street to any motorized vehicles, except for their own, of course.

Anybody who has taken the bus probably has a good idea where the motorhome is located, it would be the only lot with no real wall. Perhaps they would have better luck petitioning the landlord to build a wall to keep out some of the noise

Alabama only exists as a buffer between GA and MS. I don't have any idea why AR exists.

That Mind Set - Page 3 Empty Response: That Mind Set

Post by Carpat2017 Sun Apr 16, 2017 10:37 pm

My wife is devastated by this whole forum, as she is the gringa of reference. I am the husband who drives the RV. If Trailrunner had given my wife a chance to finish her statement, it would have been come out that road safety for the ninos is the concern, many of whom are our neighbours. This after witnessing a bad bus accident at the bottom of our street that very day. She made the mistake of saying it was about the noise,.... (it was a mistake that she admits to). Please don't crucify her for having concerns about the children.
After more than 25+ years each in the Canadian Military(CV available on request) our focus here is safety & assisting the local community through our mission work. We have done this in several countries outside of our birthplace. A little research would show that our military's humanitarian work is one of our ongoing focus points, along with peacekeeping. It distresses me that those who should work together, & even attempt to educate others, instead denigrate those that have the temerity to have an opinion contrary to their own. We have lived, worked & fared well in communities/countries other than our own.  We welcome those that wish to visit (since Trailrunner has told you all where we live now), with a civil exchange of ideas. I'm sorry that some feel they can construct "informed" opinions based on a virtual snapshot. Perhaps walking in some else's shoes for a while might help a jaded viewpoint on the world. I believe that one should treat everyone as they would wish to be treated.

Just a comment about Carpat2017's reaction: Most of this back and forth is old timers joking about newcomers who have the foolish notion that they are going to get up a petition which will change the way things are here or who can't adjust to the differences. If the comments made were "devastating", how does your wife handle a real life problem?

Buses go tearing down all the streets around here and it's up to their mothers to keep a close eye on the children.

Thanks for clarifying the intent carpat2017. I certainly didn't see any comments that should be considered devastating to anyone. Whether it was due to noise or safety there isn't any likelihood of changing the bus route. That is what gave us a good chuckle. Please tell your wife there was no ill intent meant here.

I have not participated in this discussion so far, but have to agree with Gringal and CBob. I am still not sure how Carpat's wife "made a mistake" by saying she was petitioning for a bus route change because the buses are too noisy when what she meant was she wanted to protect children. Does she not care what happens to children on other streets as long as the noisy buses are threatening harm to them on a street other than the one on which she lives? The posters here created an opinion from a virtual snapshot while Carpat's wife created a mission over a single bus accident when they occur here every day on any street in any village.
Also, if Carpat thinks this thread "crucified" his wife and devastated her he should keep her off the internet. She is far too fragile.

In reading the OP, I don't believe the subject posted on the internet or this forum, just a repeat or hearsay that TR posted and presumably read by her. Also there wasn't any reference made to noise in the OP.
Maybe she didn't feel comfortable making a defense of her conversation if she wasn't/isn't a member of the board or had difficulty figuring out how to become one.
A big brouhaha over nothing and something (a bus route, ha) that no one is going to change
