NOTHING IN THE WORLD CAN TAKE THE PLACE OF PERSISTENT.
TALENT WILL NOT: NOTHING IS MORE COMMON THAN UNSUCCESSFUL PEOPLE WITH TALENT.
GENIUS WILL NOT: UNREWARDED GENIUS IS ALMOST A PROVERB:
EDUCATION ALONE WILL NOT; THE WORLD IS FULL OF EDUCATED DERELICTS.
PERSISTENCE AND DETERMINATION ALONE ARE OMNIPOTENT.
I was just given an $84.02 USD credit from United Airlines for the Mexican Departure Tax charged my wife and myself for an outgoing flight from Mexico.
It took an hour+ and 5 holds/transfers along with me explaining that since both myself and my wife had resident visas from Mexico, we were exempt from the departure tax.

Isn't the Tourist fee $25 USD per person or has it changed? How was $84.02 arrived at?

The tourism fee (Code UK) is for a 180 day visa for visitors, or anyone.
The Departure Fee is different. It is for every person, other than Mexicans,Diplomats, and legal residents (Green card holders), and some other exceptions.
Right now, it's $42.01 USD per person and built into the airline charge.

How did you convince them you were really residents? did you have to scan them a copy of your visa card or give them your number. I am surprised they believed you over the phone. We fly a lot but have never tried to get the tax back. Tell us the secret.

I called, quoted the law and said I wanted a refund and wasn't taking "No" for an answer and wasn't going away.sm1mex wrote:How did you convince them you were really residents? did you have to scan them a copy of your visa card or give them your number. Here is the "secret."

Since someone stated, "there's no such thing as a stupid question", I'll ask mine: How can one tell they are being charged a Mexico Departure Tax? Is it listed in the airline ticket charges? Or, is it a point-blank automatic built-in charge by all airlines departing Mexico?

On Delta, when you get right to the check out final screen, it gives you a summary of the charges. There is a note (link) that says "Taxes and fees." Click that, and you will get a breakdown.
On AA, the link is listed as "Price and tax information."
When I finished with my encounter w/Delta, I was sent a revised billing detailing the fees and the Mx. Departure Tax had been delisted.

I can't find it since I lost my H.D. a couple of years ago, but I know Attorney Spencer McMullen has a copy of the law in both Spanish and English as I personally sent it to him when we were discussing his class action complaint against an airline.
I'm sure Spencer will weigh in here.
