Social Security Notice
Anybody know how long you have to respond to that 'are you dead yet' form we get from SS to verify we still need payment? Got one yesterday that was dated June. I will send it back today via Handy Mail but it will still take a week.
TIA

Re: Social Security Notice
You have 60 days. If they cancel your payment....they will immediately re-send it.

Re: Social Security Notice
I'm lost here. I have been receiving full SS for 15-years and I never got a note asking if I were dead, etc.
Should I be concerned that I may have missed something?
Maybe call SS?
How do they decide who to send those notes to? Age?

It's actually sort of scary if someone is living from SS check to SS check.

Re: Social Security Notice
It is a real pain when you don't send it back. Last year husband lost our forms - don't ask how, I don't want to talk about it - and it was hell getting it fixed. Many expensive 800 number phone calls

My spouse and I got those forms delivered to our door well on time. Maybe it had to do with the fact that they are aware of our real address at the agency. Or, maybe we were just lucky.
I do know at least one person living from SS check to check and it's a tough way to go. The good news is that he CAN live on that here in Mexico. No way, in the states, any more.

It depends if they know you are in Mexico or not, I guess. I personally don't want the Fed. govt. knowing any more about me than absolutely necessary, but they know I'm here. I don't want to be fined for not having insurance coverage in the US.

Re: Social Security Notice
You might check with SS. Be sure they have your address, etc.
We've been receiving them regularly for years, but don't remember when they started.
Speaking of maintaining privacy, I have managed to disappear from the web's private location seeking snoops since before my last known address in the U.S.
A minor victory over the Borg, into which "you will be assimilated".

Re: Social Security Notice
The SS only does that if they know you live out of the US.
If you die in the US, the CDC is notified which notifies the SS admin.
I live in a PO box in Laredo, TX and have my check deposited into a US bank.
I don't tell anyone in the US where I actually live if I can help it. I'm avoiding the "Borg" also.

Re: Social Security Notice
Those P.O. boxes in Laredo have limited usefulness, as I discovered when I tried to get a roll of stamps delivered there. I have one of those for regular mail, too. But..they're onto that. I know because the U.S. Postal service told me so.
Besides, what's the point?

And do you have approved insurance in the US so they don't fine you for not having it?

Re: Social Security Notice
Resistance is futile, the Borg is everywhere, look what they have done to Betty and Number 2....but you are allowed more than one address....tell them we live most of the time here and the rest of the time in an apartment in Laredo texas and we do not receive the dreaded letter any more. As to US medical insurance our part A, which is free is considered, insurance.

Re: Social Security Notice
I stopped doing my yearly tax when I began taking SS. That's all the income I have so I never owed the government anything. That was six years ago and I knew they would start sending those letters. I don't get any mail so my ex forges my signature and sends it back.
My SS check is deposited in the U.S. and I was told they don't care where I live.

Re: Social Security Notice
I mailed the form yesterday, it will be interesting to see if there is a deposit today.
I didn't know you could give them 2 addresses, been thinking of "moving back" in case the Orange One decides that all people collecting SS must live in the US.

Bolded For Emphasis
I'm not trying to be a smart a$$. Why would you and other posters post subjects on the WWW such as the bolded above per your words.
Obviously IF THE GOVERNMENT WANTED TO CRACK DOWN AND I'M INCLUDING MEXICO. We have read about illegal and other stories which could get your Visa revoked and you sent back to your country of origin.
Your info is readily obtainable. As you and others know in USA your Social Security could be revoked, and or fined.
My question is why post this information? Granted the percentage of these scenarios are unlikely BUT Is it worth it IF it happened to YOU?
I really am curious why people write these topics online. Anyone want to address this issue?

Yes, this is not about "awfullizing". The Orange one has about the chance of a snowball in hell of cancelling SS payments to those living outside the U.S. In fact, foreign workers who earned at least 40 quarters of coverage working in the U.S. at any time are entitled to collect benefits when they return to their home country. For one thing, the cost of living in the U.S. is so high that they would end up with a lot more welfare cases if some of the expats returned, not to mention the increased use of health care services denied to us who live outside the country.
But, back to the topic: After Banamex USA thew us Mexico residents under the bus several years ago, we scrambled to find a place to have our SS checks deposited, find a US based bank or credit union that would welcome foreigners and give them credit cards as well as access to all normal bank services. We did it, so it can be done without trying to use a P.O.Box in Texas, another persons' address or any other method of doing business without revealing where we really live.
If anyone needs to find such such services, PM me. I received the information needed from a poster on TOB and am happy to "play it forward".

Re: Social Security Notice
I get the form and it is late every year (Mexican Correo). I simply skype the 800 number and ask them to make a note in my file. Then I fill in the form and send it using one of the local mail services here. Never had a problem
