New CFE extortion scam

I got a call yesterday that a person from CFE (electric company) was at a clients home with the police and they were threatening to shut off their power in Chula Vista. They said that they needed an immediate payment of $40,000 pesos cash or else they would cut off the electricity and if they did that then the bill would be $3,000,000, property was tenant occupied and landlord was out of area and scared and when we checked with CFE they said THEY NEVER SEND PEOPLE OUT AND NEVER ASK FOR CASH. Gave a name of Claudia and a cell number to call. They also said they would cut the power if they called me so I immediately went there and they were gone, I wanted to take their pictures. Funny thing was there were real Chapala police officers with them so maybe they fooled the cops too. Be wary of anybody wanting cash and any payments not made at an official office with official, receipt.

All these newbies and tourists are bringing the predators and scammers out of the woodwork.

Had a friend visiting and she signed up for a "tour" from someone on FB. The tour lasted about 2 hours, drove around Chapala and Ajijic neighborhoods, never even went to Joco or past west Ajijic, and charged her 100 US. She ended up using a private driver for something later and told him the story and he said - What! I would have charged you half that! I told her I would have done it for free!

How the police could say they couldn’t call their lawyer????

Last year a really high CFE bill arrived and it ended up that of all things, the meter that was switched out was from a house in Chula Vista with the same address and a big bill! Crazy.

Why the misleading title of the thread? The perps had nothing to do with the CFE. I would think a lawyer would choose his words more carefully.

There have been prior scams such as the fake email billing. The people were impersonating someone from CFE although the police were with them, one can never be too careful.

Getting folks scared because the sky is falling? This has nothing to do with communication skills. It has to do with establishing a need for lawyers. I have my own truly effective way of handling corruption that never involves attorneys.

Most of you don't have the experience I have, or the time I have in Mexico, and the number of countries I've been worldwide. So it's just natural that you would pretend you've got it all under control and "whistle in the graveyard" hoping that everything will eventually be OK. Mexico is a cesspool of violence and people like many of you are the enabling cause. Your jealousy that you didn't have an interesting life is showing! Grow up.

You have no idea about other people's history, and your attempted dismissal of others is pathetic. The b.s. I smelled was your claiming YOU knew how to handle the criminal types.

Nobody is arguing with you about whether there is entirely too much crime and corruption. The fact is that there isn't a thing retired expat non-citizens can do to change the situation. We have only the choice of staying, with fingers crossed, or leaving.

Next sniff of b.s.: Just what, exactly, do you or others around you think is going to negatively affect expats if AMLO, the leftist, is elected? I've heard others claim that, too, but so far, nobody will stick his or her neck out and get specific. Here's your chance to be the first.

It has been my experience that people who truly have lived a life like the Retired one claims and really are the kind of person he pretends to be are very quiet about it. They are not on web boards (even anonymously) swaggering and bragging. They most especially don’t call themselves Retired Fed and make most every post a graphic novel starring them. They have no need to. They know who they are. The Retired one sounds like just another wannabe, neverwas, pathetic one who is starved for attention. I would feel sorry for him if he was not so annoying.

I won't go so far as to say you're entirely right about this man since we don't know the facts, but you made a good point about people who have had the kind of lives that would make a good movie are generally quiet about it.
There are exceptions, and I've known a few overgrown egos attached to interesting lives.
