Re: Is it worth it?
For me, life is good here in spite of all the frustrations we deal with. I came with open eyes and did my best to suppress any expectations. If things do eventually get out hand here, the airport is just up the road for a flight back home.
Unrelated: Is there an "Edit" function on this board? I often need to correct errors in my posts. I can't find an edit button. Thanks

This is your perception of the Lake Chapala region??
No, I meant it is a chilling contrast to the relatively peacefulness here. I can't imagine the amount of denial that would be needed to remain there.
Sorry, I misunderstood the post.

Have to somewhat agree. I am more worried what happens if Obrador wins the election I think the country would become wide open to narcos. The hands of the current President of Chapala are not exactly clean.

Re: Is it worth it?
In the city we were from NOB, the police didn't protect you, they just mopped up after the crime was committed. If you live in a community where there isn't a lot of poverty, you won't see or hear about muggings and robberies all that often because there probably are not as many. Our NOB city of 250K has plenty of violent crime, robberies, gun violence ,assaults and thefts. So I guess it all depends on where you come from.
I remember reading about a home invasion in Ajijic on a forum 8 years ago and I questioned our move. Then I realized this was my bubble being burst that this was "paradise". People are people the world around, you have some form of crime no matter where you live, it's all relative to your experiences. We lived in a smaller city with some real issues of drug use, violent crime and homelessness. Low wages, high rents didn't help either. So again, it's all relative to where you were from and what you have experienced.
During a renovation of a 100+ year old house NOB, I had $3000 worth of tools stolen , someone broke into my garage overnight. In that city, police don't even come to the scene, you just file a report online and file insurance claims. They only show if the burglar is still in the building. I called once because my neighbors were screaming at each other in the middle of the street, dispatcher asked if they had displayed weapons, if not, call back if they physically fight, they don't roll on that kind of call. I'm not trying to say it's not dangerous here, but it's all relative to what you have experienced before and what you are comfortable accepting as a risk.

Why do you think the country would become wide open to narcos if AMLO wins, Doc Holiday?

Re: Is it worth it?
a pretty funny question.. why would anything be different if Obrador won? The local guy does not have to be a Morena guy.. it will be someone the local support ot who wins the elections no matter what.. The narcos will continue doing whatever they are doing , I do not see anything changing from one government or another ..A lot of oportunistic politicians are switching to Morena..so what will change.. probably nothing..

Mexican elections. >> "Solo los colores cambian.." in reference to the colors of each political party"
(Or to put into American political context, Red to Blue or Blue to Red, but the people still get screwed the same)

According to the expatistan site only about a 40% price premium for Victoria vs. Lakeside but the good news is with grey and drizzle 9 months out of the year you'll likely off yourself before incurring too many years of debt.

Re: Is it worth it?
When my cousins NOB ask me if I'm afraid living in Mexico, I point out where I came from.
For several years, I lived about a mile from the Century 21 Theater in Aurora and saw many movies there. I had a couple of friends who were closely connected to Columbine. Nothing as bad as either one of those has happened here....

Where do U.S. prisoners come from. Article.
Many will find this study interesting. Tied in zip codes to prisoners. Highest rate was Nashville. Scroll down to the map - Texas and Florida do not appear to be safe at all. I can sort of understand why many feel the need for personal firearms.

Doc seems to have taken a holiday from the board. Let me try to fill in for him...although I'm guessing he or she won't agree with what I have say.
For starters, the guy's name is Andrés Manuel López Obrador. He has a first and middle name and two surnames. The first surname is his father's family name and the second is his mother's. So he could be referred as Sr. López or Sr. López Obrador. I suggest you get used to using his initials: AMLO.
Following a very successful term as mayor of Mexico City, AMLO ran for president of the country in 2006 and officially lost by 0.6 percent of the vote. The election was fraught with "irregularities." It is generally accepted that AMLO was cheated out of the presidency. Instead, the PANista candidate, Felipe Calderon, became president. Calderon's first act in office was to declare war on the drug cartels. How'd that work out? Not too well at all, huh? Calderon's war on drugs resulted in the deaths of well over 100,000 people. The cartels became stronger, richer and more well armed. Carleron's war continues to this day.
If elected president this year, which appears most likely, AMLO desires to have an "open discussion" on how to deal with the problems of drugs and organized crime. Everything would be on the table in this discussion, including outright legalization of personal drug use and amnesty for the cartels in exchange for disbanding.

Re: Is it worth it?
I don't think the cartel members give a rat's ass about amnesty and disbanding anything. If they can't sell drugs for a profit they will ramp up their other criminal activities. Once a criminal always a criminal......

Yeah. I agree.
I want to go back to the Fox presidency where every one just ignored each other and did their thing and everything was cool.

Yep, if any deal is to be made it would be one where the cartels are given leeway to conduct all the international crime they want as long as they cease their domestic activities.......

Exactly.
And anyone who thinks any president, or any politician anywhere, is going to win any "war on drugs" anywhere is delusional!

I think Obrador would cave in and make it a much bigger problem. He likes money to drive his socialist programs. He is no friends of Americans and I am afraid he would try to make Americans pay more somehow.....just my thoughts...............

Got it. So, a politician who likes money to help the people is worse than the politician who likes money to benefit himself and his cohorts not caring what happens to anyone else.
And, you’re afraid he might feel about Americans the same way some very vocal Americans feel about Mexicans. You are concerned he might be as petty as the U.S. president and his enablers who willingly harm individuals within their borders just because they can. Yeah, that is possible, but until he is elected and actually proves his Trumpian qualities toward foreigners I will continue to enjoy my life which is pretty amazing here.

Re: Is it worth it?
If he dislikes the US then he will stop the war on drugs, partner up with the strongest cartel to overthrow all the others as long as they "cease all domestic terrorism and give back to the community, let the drugs f!ow freely through Mexico and tell the US to build their friggin wall and stop the flow themselves.........
