Pancho's New Store
Saw Pancho today, the new store will be open in Sept. It will encompass the whole bottom floor of that building in Riberas just east of Maskaras that was supposed to be a hospital. He will have a full service grocery store with deli, seating, fresh baked breads, fresh juices, you name - it it's in the works. Parking will be in front of the store and the store behind. There will be delivery as well.
He is so excited, he showed me the photos and plans. He works so hard, I'm happy for him and can't wait until it's open!
He will keep the little one in Ajijic that he has now.

So I thought it was going to be the building that's been for rent/sale opposite side of street that
was formerly Dukes, then Mateo's. There is a lot of remodeling going on - wonder what it will be.

I was in Sl this week, it is way cleaner that it ever was.. I buy veggies I cannot get somewhere else and Asian fish sauce and peanut oil.. I do not buy much of anything else, they will not get rich on me and if everyone else goes to Pancho then it will be easy to park, so it is ok with me
I mostly shop in my neighborhood otherwise .

Re: Pancho's New Store
With all the brands of butter that SL sells, not one was salted. What are they thinking? At least one stick!!

I am sure that if you request low fat mil at SL they will carry it.. if they don t Walmart carries it and there is no problem with parking there.

Milk falls under price controls, so other than variety, not much need for shopping.

Re: Pancho's New Store

I didn't realize that either. What other sorts of consumer items have price controls?

I believe all the staples such as bread, milk, tortillas, eggs, oil, frijoles and rice. There may be more. No se.

Yes, staples, and I think there are over a hundred items total.

Some years ago, maybe 15 or 20, there were about 20 items under government price control limits.
TR says there are 100 now, I don't know but that seems like a lot. Maybe if you describe frijoles by every variety rather than just frijoles. Same with rice, corn, etc., etc.
It's like pharma, they can charge less but can't go over the top of the government ceiling limit.
Even with the new competitive gasolineras, other than Pemex, I'm sure there is government control there as well.

Re: Pancho's New Store
eggs_ I wonder .. There can be huge difference between eggs, not the regular stuff from the supermarket or little stores but I know that at the market the eggs vary a lot. Is bread a staple here? I would think corn would be controlled as well but again not sure because they are big price differences as well..

Re: Pancho's New Store
According to the Financial Times, in 2008 price controls were put on more than 150 items. That was the top result in the search I put in but can’t say for sure none of it has changed. I don’t care enough to dig deeper.

Re: Pancho's New Store
Sainte, I did a quick search and found only dated info, can't find anything current. The one thing I did see said there were controls on 150 items but it was dated 2008.
I dunno. I thought it was only 5 things - milk, tortillas, cooking oil, Tuna, and I can't remember what else. Maybe infant formula. . .
Probably the link LOL posted.
