Snail Mail Mexico To US
I sometimes sell collectible paper 'ephemera' on Ebay. Nothing particularly valuable or fragile. Sent mostly in standard size envelopes weighing 1 oz +/- with a cardboard stiffener to protect the item inside from being easily bent.
On Ebay, speed and reliable delivery are both pretty important, but speed is less critical than reliability. How reliable is Correos de Mexico mailing to the US and other foreign destinations?
Does Correos de Mexico have the equivalent of both USPS 1st Class and USPS Priority? Rough cost?
If anyone could direct me to any blog postings or a site that address the ins/outs of mailing, it would be greatly appreciated.
TIA

Re: Snail Mail Mexico To US
All I can tell you is it takes many months for me to receive anything mailed from Canada. It takes a couple of days for the letter to hit the US/Mexico border and months from there so...…….

Yeah, it's not easy. Correos takes forever and may not get there at all. Sent a Huichol bracelet to a friend in Hawaii a few months ago, it took probably 3 months to get there and I had given up. The Ajijic PO guy said it would take a week.
I once tried selling on EBay and I tried supplying stores in SF with Mexican bolsas at one time as well, both endeavors were a pain due to trying to ship reliably. Very hard to guarantee delivery to the customer by a certain date. The import and shipping businesses here are expensive and take a long time too, but are more secure.
Had a friend who closed his consignment shop and opened an Etsy store and he had all the same problems.
Try it, maybe you can make it work for you.

Handy Mail will send a letter for 20 pesos... It is trucked to Laredo and placed in US mail there... I would consider this a lot faster and reliable than Mexican mail...

Absolutely agree with rvanparys. With the Mexican Postal Service, it takes forever, if at all. I regularly get Christmas cards throughout April... and they were mailed from Canada at the end of November. Quite honestly, snails move faster.

Very true but make sure you show the contents before sealing so they’re assured you aren’t sending money or checks.

So for about $1.08 plus the required USPS postage for the item, Handy Mail will mail it in the US? Sounds very smart to do it that way.
How often does Handy Mail make the run? I think I saw them (and maybe a competitor or sorts?) mentioned on a thread here. Maybe about getting mail delivered in Mexico? I will lok to see if there is a link to Handy Mail and maybe my questions are answered there.
Did I read correctly that Handy Mail would want to see the contents of every letter I might mail? So you take a letter unsealed, take out the contents, they look at it, and then you can seal and give it to them to be mailed?
Does anyone have a suggestion of how I could get my paper ephemera items there safely from the US? They pack well in reasonable sized boxes. There would be quite a few to ship. Per item value pretty minimal. But a healthy amount per box. More than I would want to lose.
Any issues shipping them in with me only on a tourist VISA t start out?
Appreciate the rapid responses with sage warnings and a viable solution.

It would be a good idea to go into Handy Mail and ask the specific questions that are pertinent to your needs. They are located in the little strip mall to the east of SuperLake. JP Home Services is also located in the same unit.
Then trot about a 100 feet and make the same enquiries at iMail on the next corner.
Both offer more options if you have a yearly subscription to send/receive mail. It totally depends on your needs and wants.

One of the mail services doesn't handle packages, can't remember which one but I know IShop does. I think they are all capable of acting as agents for UPS or Fed Ex, which might be the way to go, also DHL (all international). Estafeta inside Mexico.

Yes, iShop (iMail) does accept packages but so does Handy Mail since they are often stacked behind the counter awaiting pick up by customers.

There is an entire group of new businesspeople making runs to the north and east border to escort people from there to Lake Chapala. If you contact them, and there are about 6 or 8 people doing this it might be a reliable and less costly way of moving your mail.

I don’t think you have to remove everything from the envelope to show there are no checks or money. Not sure what kind of paper things you’re sending but at Handy Mail, I just open the envelope enough to show there’s only a card or letter inside. It’s 20pesos for stamped mail but you can also buy postage there.

[quote="Carry Bean"] Not sure what kind of paper things you’re sending.
Think older collectible trade/advertising cards much like, and similar in size, to the baseball cards we collected as kids.
Based on what I am reading, there should be a way to do it.
Thank you all for the advice.
