I seem to recall that margarine was sold white in those days so no one could rip off the public passing it off as butter.

Possibly so. My taste buds don't remember that part. But The Rosebud Creamery used Gurnsey milk, with lots of good cream and we did churn on occasion.

Margarine is a non-dairy substitute.

Yes. However, a bad one. Chemicals and artificial unpronouncable junk. One molecule away from plastic. bla bla bla Vegan butters are the answer, good tasting, natural oils and flavorings. Earth Balance Original at El Granero.

My mother (who’d be over 100 if still alive) told me about the packet of yellow dye used to make the white margarine yellow. It was the kids’ job to mix in the color. She said margarine had to be made and sold white because some people had been trying to pass off margarine as butter. Maybe in Canada they didn’t provide the yellow dye because Canadians weren’t whiny babies complaining that their margarine was white. Or maybe there were not as many dishonest Canadians trying to pass off margarine as butter.

Oh it was in Canada. Oleo margarine came with the orange dye bubble that you mixed through it. My mum only used butter. The lady who gave me lunch and took me in after school only served margarine. Lunch was often cinnamon toast..... toast with margarine and loaded down with cinnamon sugar.
I don't remember my mum ever asking me what I got for lunch but I do remember mixing the dye button for Mrs. Franner. I was seven.

We stayed at a boarding house in the Ruhr in Germany when I was 5. The house-owners made their own beer. I didn't get the beer, but the margarine was everywhere. It was a big deal in Europe in those days, but started to wind down after that. Probably as people realized the taste was disgusting, and they know how to eat well. Margarine in baked strudel in Germany? Yikes.

It seems the critical element is “I was raised on Miracle Whip.” Doesn’t seem to matter whether it is MW or mayonnaise. Whichever one we ate as kids is the one we prefer. There may be some adults who switch allegiance but I am guessing not many.

I can´t tell the difference between the two, but don´t use either one very often.  I know Miracle Whip has all the same ingredients as other mayonnaise, but different measures and some added stuff, like sugar and spices.
I eat what they give me at someone´s house, so I don´t give a damn.  If eating at a place like Burger King or other fast food place for a hamburger, I tell them "no mayonesa".

It was a law that the dairy farmers associations, mainly Wisconsin, that got passed into law, in order to preserve their more profitable sale of their butter.  If if didn´t look like butter, then people who could afford butter wouldn´t be tempted to buy it.

Sorry CG, I hope I didn´t trigger some hidden internal button that makes you take off on "butter". lol! lol! lol!

From Miracle Whip to Mayonnaise to butter and margarine, and a history lesson to boot.

We are so BORED being shut-ins! Very Happy

P.S. I agree with the theory that we prefer what we "grew up with". I think the flavor of Miracle Whip is scary bad. But I know others love it so good for them.

For a look at extended stupidity on a given topic, check out the thread on Dobermans on TOB. It went from looking for pups, to the cruelty of clipping their ears, to female genital mutilation with the associated typical self-aggrandizing disgust in less than 10 posts.

Miracle Whip is such a Waspy American thing. Like margarine and jello molds full of grated carrots and miniature marshmallows.
