JALISCO EXPERIENCES POST HOLIDAY COVID SURGE; HOSPITAL BEDS SCARCE
Authorities say family gatherings over the holiday period have led to a surge in Covid-19 case numbers and deaths in Jalisco, despite the restrictions imposed in Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta between December 25 and January 10.
The 120 deaths registered on January 8 was the highest number Jalisco has reported in a single day, although authorities say backlogged cases contributed to the high figure. And in the past week, the number of new cases diagnosed each day has averaged 1,340 – up from around 900 two weeks ago – with a record 1,600 cases reported on January 9.
A press release from the University of Guadalajara (UdG), which on Tuesday suspended its entire in-person administrative operation for two weeks, said the state was experiencing “unprecedented levels” of contagion.
Another growing problem is the lack of hospital beds for Covid patients with serious symptoms. Media reports suggest public hospitals of both the Jalisco Health Department (SSJ) and IMSS are turning away the sick because of lack of bed space. Nearly all the private hospitals in Guadalajara treating Covid patients no longer have beds available, and their ICUs are also full, the reports say.
Although the state governor says hospitalizations are running at 55.2 percent (1,514 beds occupied out of 2,728 available) and that more beds are being added, the official figures are disputed by reporters who have undertaken investigations at several city hospitals. In a story published Tuesday, Mural wrote about “Karla,” an infected person experiencing breathing difficulties who was told there was no space at Guadalajara’s Hospital General de Occidente or the Zoquipan Hospital in Zapopan, which, according to the SSJ’s figures, has more than half of its Covid-designated beds still available.
Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro said his “coronavirus cabinet” will meet on January 15 to go over the current data and decide whether to implement further restrictions in the state.

Re: More on the virus
In news reports during the past several days I have seen the following observation expressed in various contexts:
" . . . the highest recorded rate since the coronavirus pandemic began . . ."
And so the worst is perhaps still before us.

I think you may be correct. People are fed up and they get complacent and lax as a result. Bisbee Gal posted this on TOB... restrictions in Jocotepec implemented by the presidente there... https://www.chapala.com/webboard/index.php?/topic/89880-jocotepec-presidente-announces-business-restrictions-beginning-today-january-13th/
Not sure what Alfaro is waiting for but I don't care. I got my groceries yesterday and I'm locked down for the next couple of weeks. Gawd this is getting tedious... and lonely.

Re: More on the virus
Alfaro is supposed to review data on the 15th (tomorrow).
Overnight, newspaper reports that Joco plaza has been taped off and closed.
Alfaro's decision to "lockdown" only Guadalajara and PV over the holidays will lead to more infections/deaths in other parts of Jalisco, including Lakeside. What was he thinking???? That people wouldn't get in their cars and go elsewhere???

I still much prefer to be living Lakeside "Covid cautious" than back in the UnUnited States
sharing space with crazies who are glad to get in your face to tell you they have a god-given,
inalienable right to be maskless during this pandemic because it's all a conspiracy power-grab.
Forget that the hospitals and funeral homes are over flowing with Covid. Thank you Mexico for
letting us stay in your beautiful (not perfect) country!

Re: More on the virus
My good friend Eddie died today of COVID in Dell Seton Hospital in Austin, Texas. He lasted one week in ICU. He worked at the University of Texas for 45 years and on weekends he played drums in a rock band. At times he would deliver food, medicines, clothing, blankets to the homeless who lived around downtown Austin. He did that out of kindness, and those acts were not for "virtual signaling". They were random acts of kindness that he seldom spoke about to others.
It was an inconvenience for Eddie to serve in Viet Nam to defend and protect our rights and freedoms. What a huge inconvenience it is to wear a mask to protect others. His wife is also in ICU, He is survived by one son.
Yes I am shaming non mask wearers. I know off topic but a reminder that this pandemic is no hoax.

Re: More on the virus
"virtue signaling" and "cancel culture" are being used far too often by privilege rich old white men these days. Usually incorrectly and snidely. I thank your friend for going out of his way. I have a family member who does the same in freezing cold Ottawa, giving out those crushable hand warmers, masks, money, socks, and various other items to people on the streets. He seeks no recognition from anyone, including the recipients, other than a smile. He's better than I.

I am so sorry for the loss of your friend Kiko and I do hope his wife pulls through.
Such a small thing to wear a mask or a bandana over your face. The people who won't disgust me with their small mindedness and selfishness. Stay the course and be safe.
