What's in a name????????????????
The Washington Redskins name! Great read!
Sent by a friend
-This captures most of the teams’ names.
This is a fun read - besides the fact the country has gone nuts with
this subject.
I think all sports fans and most everybody else will get a kick out
of this letter written to the Chicago Tribune. No matter which side
you are on in the matter of renaming the Washington Redskins, this is
funny. This guy is hilarious.. This is an e-mail sent to Clarence
Page of the Chicago Tribune after an article he published concerning a
name change for the Washington Redskins.
Dear Mr. Page: I agree with our Native American population. I am
highly jilted by the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins
One might argue that to name a professional football team after Native
Americans would exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay. We must be
careful not to offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and
courtesy, we must move forward.
Let's ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the
Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad because of the
reference the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we need to get
rid of the Cleveland Browns.
The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of
militant Blacks from the 60's alive. Gone. It's offensive to us white
folk.
The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a team
named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference to
that tragic war that cost this country so many young men's lives. I am
also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion among
our sports team names. Totally inappropriate to have the New Orleans
Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres.
Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and
pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, the
Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh
Pirates!
Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message to
our children. The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting or
even spending habits. Wrong message to our children.
The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a
growing childhood epidemic. Wrong message to our children. The
Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates. Wrong message to our
children.
The Milwaukee Brewers. Well that goes without saying. Wrong message to
our children.
So, there you go. We need to support any legislation that comes out
to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become
involved with this issue, as they should. Just the kind of thing the
do-nothing Congress loves.
As a die-hard Oregon State fan, my wife and I, with all of this in
mind, suggest it might also make some sense to change the name of the
Oregon State women's athletic teams to something other than "the
Beavers (especially when they play Southern California. Do we really
want the Trojans sticking it to the Beavers???
I always love your articles and I generally agree with them. As for
the Redskins name I would suggest they change the name to the
"Foreskins" to better represent their community, paying tribute to the
dick heads in Washington DC.

Not a very woke way to see the issue.

I love when white people explain how inoffensive these team names are. “Honor” the brave warriors by giving the team a name that has been used as a racial slur for centuries? Yeah. Nothing offensive about that says the white guy.

Just give 'em a number according to the order in which the teams were formed.
Oh wait, no, that's not a good idea. They'll be fighting for who gets to be number 1 if more than one team was formed at the beginning.

In the poor school district I attended in my youth we never had enough shirts for sports to go around so one team went shirtless. The teams were called the shirts and the other the skins. I guess you could call each team by their jersey colors and just eliminate the black, brown, white, red, pink, and yellow jerseys.

Yeah, this is just like Major League Baseball worked it out.

I was okay with it because I misread it, thinking it was written by Clarence Page, a black man and a senior editor on the Tribune. Re-reading showed me that it was just some letter sent in to him. The trouble, to me, with casting this aside is that for the "righteous" it becomes an effort to change history. What happened, happened. Discussion is what is needed going foreword.
Clarence Page himself said this in response to the letter: "The views of Native Americans are important, to say the least, after being ignored for much too long. Still I hope the team and Native American communities can resolve this divide without further marginalizing a history about which too many Americans know too little."

How would keeping a racially insulting name for a baseball team teach other Americans the history of a people white Europeans did everything they could to wipe off the face of the earth? I believe this fight to get rid of the name and making clear why it is being done will go much further in that direction. It might even get to the people who have so little knowledge of and regard for indigenous people that they find this all humorous.

But we will still have the Detroit Tigers, the Seattle Mariners and the Minor League Toledo Mudhens.

I did NOT say they should keep it, or intimate anything of the sort. You are reading too much into a simple response. My problem with all this is the "herd mentality" reaction these days to everything perceived to be non-PC. There is almost no thought or planning given to anything anymore that offends anyone, right or wrong. I personally was terribly offended when in a knee-jerk response to Americans tearing down certain statues, a bunch of idiot Canadians decided to tear down a statue of Sir John A. MacDonald, a founding father of Canada, because of his flaws, completely ignoring the overwhelming contributions he made to establishing the country. No thought, no planning, no rationale: just a place to stick some long-building anger.

Re: What's in a name????????????????
Some "flaws" are forgivable; others, not. IMHO, having the name of a slave owning Confederate attached to a modern military base is innapropriate, as a "for instance."
Just for general information, the term "politically correct" began in Communist China, and it referred to those who aligned with the thoughts of the leaders and the "little Red Book".
