Make Sure Your License Plate is Plainly Visible

We got this email from S&S Auto yesterday,

I've been stopped in Texas for a blocked plate because the GDL dealership installed a frame around the plate and about 1/2" of the word "Jalisco" was covered on the bottom of the plate. It had no bearing on the authenticity of the plate whatsover and all of the letters and numbers were clearly visible. The deputy asked me why I was in Texas in a Mexican plated car, and I told him I drove up to vote. He then asked who I voted for and I said you don't need to know.

Maybe at 2am in an actively disputed territory, even then only if you're a young Turk driving the latest tricked-out Hummer or a Tesla truck or a massive pickup with bulletproof glass around it.

But a couple of grey-haired oldsters in a Honda CRV? Not an issue.

Driven many many miles all over MEX with Jalisco plates, never a problem.

Tamaulipas, Sinaloa, Michoacan will draw second glances in the wrong neighborhood especially at night

A few years back a young couple with a baby were ran off the road and murdered in Tuxcueca.  They were in a black Ford pick up with Michoacan plates. A puntero was looking for a black Ford pickup and he spotted their truck.  Mistaken identity.  The local cartel took them out in Tuxcueca.  It happens.

That surround is quite brittle after a couple of years. I went out with a pair of pliers and snapped it off all round both plates. Gave both plates a good bath and I'm good to go. I'm one of the lucky ones that doesn't need new plates.
