Gout Sufferers - Allopurinol Empty Gout Sufferers - Allopurinol

Post by Axixic Tue May 29, 2012 10:19 am

Any gout sufferers taking Allopurinol?

(Allopurinol [Zyloprim, and generics] is a drug used primarily to treat hyperuricemia [excess uric acid in blood plasma] and its complications, including chronic gout)

Is it widely available Lakeside? Will I require a prescription from a local MD? How expensive is it? (I pay less than $20 for 100 pills NOB)

TIA

I've been taking Zyloprim for several years, and it has worked well for me.
I buy it at Soriana grocery store without a prescription for $332 pesos for a 30 tablet box. That's equivalent to about $85 dollars for 100 tablets. A hell of a lot more than you are paying in the USA. Drugs are not always cheaper in México.

Rolly you are correct. I believe some antibiotics in Mexico are very expensive considering the number of tablets or capsules in the package.

Wow - that is a LOT more expensive. I guess I'll make it a point to bring a 6 month supply with me. Thanks for the info.

Just a thought - have you ever looked into getting a generic at Farmacia Guadalajara (or some other)? Might work out a bit cheaper for you. I know I would not want to go without these pills - they've been a wonder drug for me.

Colochiquim is another gout drug available on México for a lot less money.
$54 pesos for a 20 tab box = about $20 dollars for 100.

Thanks Rolly - looked it up and it isn't a generic version of Allopurinol (I realize that you didn't suggest that it was - just saying for those who might read and think that) but a completely different drug with some potential side effects. One of the things I like about Allopurinol (aside from the fact that it works) is that, so long as you have no allergies to it, it has no side effects. So I'll stick with it and just be sure to bring back a good supply with me from every trip North.

The gout stuff is cheap but doesn´t work well or relieve the problem with some people.

I am far from an expert but if I understood my doctor's explanation there are two "causes" of gout.

In one - the person's body produces excess uric acid in the blood in response to their diet - these people are generally not helped by Allopurinol.

In the second (which is my case) the kidneys fail to remove uric acid in the blood no matter what level is produced. The body will produce uric acid no matter what you eat - I could consume nothing but water and still have gout attacks. Somehow Allopurinol enables my kidneys to remove the uric acid (a needed enzyme or something? Not at all sure.) And as long as they are doing that I live attack free.

It seems like it's some kind of on/off switch or something because gout sufferers whose attacks are related to diet are generally not helped by Allopurinol. There is also apparently a genetic component for those of my type - and, sure enough, my father and his father both suffered from it.
