CSI NEWLETTER, MAY 29, 2012
IMPORTANT DATE
There will be TOWN HALL MEETING in Chapala, this coming Friday, June 1st at 6pm, under the big SAIL (bela) at the start of the Chapala Malecon (most Westerly spot).

Also at the meeting will be our Mayor and a representative from the Jalisco Department of Public Safety. Please get the word out to your friends in Chapala. At that meeting, the Chapala area magnets and stickers with the 24/7 Emergency Officer-on-Duty cell phone numbers will be distributed as well as the Neighborhood Watch Window Stickers and the new Anonymous Hotline, 01-800-839-1416 ‘back-of-the-phone’ stickers.

As a reminder, if you did not get your stickers and/or would like the 01-800 Anonymous Hotline phone sticker, you can pick them up at both police departments, the Chapala City Hall, and LCS.

Truths:
1) Yes, in the town of Villa Corona, outside of Cocula, a Police Chief and five of his officers were arrested for being involved with the cartels.

2) Yes, the State Police do have the authority to investigate and enter homes at Lakeside when they have been given a tip of criminal activity. If you see this happen and are in shock as to what is happening and ‘should this be happening’, call: 089. That is the direct connection to the State Police. You can find out if the activity is legitimate. If it is not, then you can call your emergency 24/7 officer-on-duty, and report it. But stay away from what is happening. This is police business and you have no idea what is going on and/or why.

3) The Police Chief is now aware that there have been many robberies when locals are driving early (heading North) on the new connector road North of the airport. Until last evening, he was unaware of these robberies, as this is not his jurisdiction. But now that he knows, he will call the Federal Police and explain the actions. He is aware that these “officers” may not really be officers at all (a factory near the border was found and destroyed that was making fake police and army uniforms, and anyone with a late model truck can have a removable magnetic type sign with any insignia they want stuck on its doors).

This is not a time to be taking short-cuts. Stay on the main roads and only travel when it is light. That is common sense right about now.

Do not keep your valuables in view. Put your money in many places, none of them being your wallet. Plan, in advance, how you would handle such a stop. REPORT any incident immediately. This is when you should call the 376-765-4444 number directly. If you get no satisfaction with that, then call the 01-800-839-1416 Hotline.

If it is not reported to the authorities, how will they ever know?
4) The incident on Monday morning, May 21, involving the 3 bad guys trying to kidnap 3 others at Pollo Feliz and Juarez was stopped by both the local and state police. It was the local police who took all into custody. Turns out, it was one gang trying to scare another gang. It was not about innocents trying to be kidnapped. The local police did their jobs. There were NO weapons found, NO grenades found, either on their persons or in the vehicle.

GOOD NEWS:
Last Thursday, Capitan Contreras and his police officers save a local woman and her family from a very threatening EXTORTION. The woman was called at her place of employment and told that they had kidnapped her son and that she was to deposit into one of these ‘express accounts’ at Wal-Mart or Soriana’s, $10,000 pesos and then she was to go to such and such motel and wait and NOT to call her home or he would be killed.

She called her employer, as she did not have $10,000 pesos, and deposited the money and went to the motel and waited. The extortionists continued to call her to keep her frightened. They also called her son and told him they ‘had his Mother’ and he was to deposit money into another ‘express account’. His father got on the phone and said he only had an old truck that was maybe worth $5000 or $6000 pesos. The extortionists told him to sell it immediately and get the money into that account, that they were holding his wife and she would be killed.

Finally, one of the people who were asked for money to help with the kidnapping (which it was not), it was just a fake kidnapping, a true extortion. Anyway, someone who trusted our police department, called the 24/7 emergency line and told the story. The police were able to trace the call from the husband’s phone number (it was a 83 area code), and they heard the story and starting checking motels asking for a single woman who had checked in and THEY FOUND HER. They burst into the room, and she was on the phone with the extortionists at the time, and she thought the police were his men there to kill her! She screamed into the phone in Spanish, “YOUR MEN ARE ALREADY HERE’!

Capitan Contreras grabbed the phone from her and tried to sweet talk the called into saying his name. No luck. The bad guy immediately knew he was caught and he told the Capitan, “you stopped another one”! The woman was overcome with fear, thinking she was going to be killed, but the police calmed her down, called her family and she spoke with everyone and she was so relieved. She begged the police to let her pay for her rescue. They said you can pay us by telling people what we have done here today….and she has; that is why you have this story.
To date, the Chapala police department has stopped over 300 extortion cases. It is the number one local crime happening right now.

CSI is recording messages in both English and Spanish to warn people about ‘what to do’ if someone tries to extort money from you with threats of kidnapping and/or killing a loved one.
Simply do NOT answer the phone if you do not know the number. If you do answer the phone and you do not know the caller, just HANG UP…immediately! And then call you 24/7 Emergency Phone Number and report the incident. The number they called from should be recorded on your phone. Do not erase that number. The police can trace it.

Thank you, CSI Chapala

I was at the Beer Garden last night and saw a few religious processions pass by and the PAN people parading around however I didn't notice any meeting going on. Was this cancelled due to the rain?

Their facebook page mentions the meeting - There will be a meeting of the municipality of Chapala, next Friday, June 1 at 6: 00 pm, in sailing at the start of the Malecon in Chapala. Also at the meeting will be our Mayor and people of the Department of prevention of the crime of the State of Jalisco so I would think prior to the meeting, they should have been setting up plastic chairs etc (the last time I attended a public event like this, they had people setting up the chairs maybe 45 minutes ahead of time - and I don't think it was raining at 5:15)

And no comments as to whether it was held or not - but they did have new comments about todays event in Ajijic DON'T FORGET. Today at the Ajijic Pier, at 10:30am the 'clean up' starts. Then by 11:30 to noon, we will be planting hundreds of WHITE FLOWERS along the NEW PEACE LABYRINTH just past the ampitheatre along the Malecon. PLEASE BE THERE. Peace and Love.

Wasn't the meeting to be held at what is sometimes called: King Kong's Thong? If so, that is probably why one could not see anything from the Beer Garden.
