An interesting read from 2010....
Here's a thread on this board from two years ago. It could have been written in the last few weeks.
Thread from 2010 about crime and people's fears.

HERE'S what I don't get: millions of people drive on a road safely every day, then ONE person is kidnapped or carjacked or whatever on that road, and despite the many millions who are just FINE, some people refuse to drive that road ever again. Those odds are 1/XX,000,000.
Yet those people are tens of thousands of times more likely to be injured or killed within 5 miles of their own home, which they drive willingly every day. Wait, they are much more likely to win the national lottery than to be kidnapped or carjacked.
Statistically, it's just insane.
IMHO when your ticket is up, it's up - I'm not going to refuse to do something because my ticket might get punched.

At the same time, I wouldn't recommend hiking alone in the local hills after dark, unless you're eager to get it over with.

It's as if a site is forevermore "tainted" after a bad thing happens there, eh? Like don't go in the mansion where somebody died, and nooo, don't open that door!

A dash of common sense should season our choices, don't you think?

Yes, a dash of common sense is good, but on the other hand, it's very expensive, and rare as well.
By all means.......go hiking after dark in the local hills,......after all, any intelligent person knows it's perfectly safe, and any fear is JUST the same as believing in ghosts.
I give up.

Haven't we been at this fork before? It sure seems familiar. Read Gavin De Becker's THE GIFT OF FEAR and then start hiking:

Gringal, amiga mia... It may be in the best interest of all
if some choose to entertain more risk overall
statistically they are reducing...
the likelihood of reproducing...
and thus become...
candidates...
for the Darwin Awards. Lizzy

Or, just continue being scared of everything! For you two, Lizzy and Gringal, do NOT read this book, you do NOT want to know when fear is useful and when fear is just plain stupidity -- it's more efficient for you two to just be scared stupid all the time, then you don't ever have to think.

Merry... It's not a matter of being scared, it is rather, a matter of making intelligent choices.
I refuse to live in fear, but didn't some fella once say, "The Lord helps those who help themselves"?
I think that means, "Use your intelligence... that's why I gave it to you."

Merry is being a know-it-all and most of us know how pointless it is to try having a civil discussion with one of those.
