Moctezuma's Revenge
The only time I got a bad case of the trots in Mexico was after eating at a fancy Italian restaurant and a time after eating ice cream at Mc Donalds, both were in Guadalajara. This was ten years ago. I do get loose when going back to the USA from MX and Central and South America though.
What are your diarrhea experiences?

Okay, serious shit here. Once every six months, treat yourself to a dose of Vermox Plus.
That's what the locals do.

Some people forget to engage their brains before putting their mouths in gear. This has been known to cause diarrhea of the mouth and atrophy of the brain. It has also been known to cause a few train wrecks. Lizzy

Re: Moctezuma's Revenge
Seriously, about a year ago I went to the Mascaras Clinic in Riberas. Dr. Manuel gave me a prescription for Espacil (for gastric pain) and Daxon (for parasites) before the lab test.gringomojado wrote:Hey I am talking serious shit here. The lab test was performed the next day and revealed no parasites, so the diagnosis was bacterial infection. Dr. Carlos Garcia Diaz gave me two more prescriptions:
Floxil for the bacterial infection and Lomotil to combat the diarrhea.
(Does that help?)

I think you can get Lomotil without a prescription and it works.

Imodium Plus works almost like magic. No prescription needed. Pharmacia Guadalajara has it. The magic .....depends on how bad it is. But usually, one dose'll do ya.
At this time of year, if you're sensitive to the bugs (like me), it's wise to avoid salads. You never know how well those fresh lettuces are being disinfected, if at all. I've been done in by several of the fancier restaurant salads. They're both out of business now. Hmmmm?

Eewww! lizzy
Seriously, Mojado ~ Pepto Bismol works for all kinds of digestive upsets. My friend who is a nurse is always dosing her many kids.
I was sick with the trots from allergy to my meds and Pepto saved the day. Wal Mart has it for about the same as in the States. A very well traveled person told me mostly the trots are caused by too much grease, too much food or too much alcohol. Or any combination of same. Luck, Lizzy

Re: Moctezuma's Revenge
Well I am out of the outhouse now. I get sick when returning to chicago for more than 3 days. I was packin' lomotil (or as they say down there "lomoteel", ya get 4 to a card and no prescription needed.
When I got that Micky D's ice cream trot case in GDL, Imodium,Lomotil and Pepto had no effect, but a tea made with leaves from the Guyaba Tree in front of the plant cured me.
There used to be a liquid called Paregoric, made from whiskey and opium that was great for the trots, it was in the USA and only needed a prescription.
In the Nam they used to smoke opium for trots. In college I tried it once and it worked, or else I didn't notice the trots.
When you have Moctezuma's Revenge, you must watch out for dehydration, so use the national Mexican cure (cure-all), Tequila con Limón.
gm
PS. Eat your tortillas, they keep you regular, and avoid estreñimiento (constipation. Speaking of constipation; I get it after a long flight, I don't know if it is air pressure, lack of tortillas, or sitting so long. Does flying stop any of you up, I mean, flying in an airplane.
Can I ask this question on a trots thread, or do I have to start a new constipation thread? I mean, as long as we are talking shit here!!!

Re: Moctezuma's Revenge
Treda is immodium with a little bit of antibiotic. If you have pain, Mexicans take Buscapina. Both are sold at the Farmacia Guadalajara, and I'm sure Walmart and Soriana. And Pepto-Bismol often helps, too. And, drink "suero" (Electrolytes), that is extremely important. But, if after a few days you aren't better, get to the doctor.

Welcome aboard LaChula!
La Chula has been here a while and she knows of what she speaks. Hi there!
I'd like to add that there are a few things for which you MUST go to the doc if the home remedies don't do the job in a day or so.
Amoebas. Nasty little buggers that basically, eat you from the inside out, reproduce rapidly, and can only be discovered for sure with a poop sample at the lab. Had 'em last year............you don't even want to hear about what it took to get rid of 'em.
Also, consider: The sooner you start a cure program, the less you'll suffer. A local doc usually only charges $200 pesos a visit. No biggie.

Re: Moctezuma's Revenge
[b]Thanks for the welcomes. Yes, sometimes something just doesn't agree with one's belly and it may eliminate via diarrhea for a day or 2. Doing home remedies and drinking ELECTROLYTES should take care of a little food poisoning. But, after 3 days or so, check with your doctor. It could be amoebas, parasites or something else that needs attention.
