I recently purchased a ACER 17" laptop, windows 7 64 bit, 4 gb ram, 500 gb hd, HDMI output usb ports. All for $430.00 from superbiiz on the internet. Nice laptop. (made in Taiwan)

I've purchased 3 Acers from Amazon for slightly under $ 500. Sounds like the same features as Loco says above. Real nice machines. We've had one that is now almost 2 years old, another went to a friend and it's a little over a year, and the other is about 9 months old. Not a single problem with any of them and they're light and pretty good boxes.

Acer is a very good company. They were one of my customers in Taiwan.

Have a 5yr old Gateway on the kitchen island ( heavy usage), a 5 yr old Dell (workhorse) n my truck for business (heavy usage) , and my guys have old Lenovo's for their trucks on every job (also about 5yr Old). All are great machines. Don't abuse them and they will treat you right.

FWIW - I have a seven year old HP that i maxed out on memory and I replaced the HD with a 500 Gig hybrid (solid state and 7200 rpm standard). Still works great using Vista O/S.

Dell is not doing well in reviews. I thought Acer was generic? Last laptop was Toshiba. Lenovo keyboard is not backlit for the cheaper version. How is the speaker sound? Reason I am not buying higher end is because later purchase for a tablet. Maybe surface.

The Acer speaker sound is what you would expect from a < $ 500 laptop, not the best but adequate

Acer is generic like LG is generic. They make most of the motherboards for everyone's else's brand names. They don't have a big brand presence, and they distribute through WalMart, so you get the benefit pricewise.

I might add that the majority of laptops have lousy sound systems, no matter the cost.

How do you know if the laptop is 3 or 6 cell battery? Also do these cheaper laptops have cd burner? Lenovo really didn't say in ad? Also some ads say add Windows 8 for 14.99 extra. Windows7 works great. What's the scoop on 8? Thanks for the help.. Will be buying next mo. See any fab deals please post will buy sooner. Should I consider spill insurance?

I am using a beta version of Windows 8 in one of my laptops. It works fine however it is really meant for touch screen technology. It is very much like an Apple touchscreen operating system IMO. I wouldn't bother with it unless I had a touchscreen monitor.

When I worked as a consultant for Big Blue, I could get gently used laptops dirt cheap and they were great. Lenovo took over and for awhile there were quality control issues. From the review it looks as if those have been solved. I too have been hearing less that stellar reviews of Windows 8. Conventional wisdom says never buy a Windows operating system until the first Service Pack is out.

The only negative things I've heard about W8 is they need to add back in some non-touchscreen stuff, like the START button...

windows 8 is not good for gaming.....

I can bring you a laptop.....I am going to Cancun first days in september, meeting there with the Ajijic family that owns "gym-nos' gym located on the highway in Ajijic, they can bring to Ajijic......you pay them when you pick up.....tell me what you want....

Windows 8 will be fine for gaming; can you imagine the uproar in the gaming industry, which is billions of dollars strong?

@helper guy..... not according to a friend of mine that is doing beta testing with windows 8 and is a gamer...he is planning on staying with windows 7

Gv ,appreciate the offer however I am in the states.

COSTCO had the best returm policies for computers.....if you are not a member, become one. they also have systems that are built to their requierements, most of the time there better then what you can buy elsewhere and usually cheaper..

So I have heard, appreciate the tip. How are they on extended warranty? Anybody have any negative issues?
