What Are You Reading Now? Empty What Are You Reading Now?

Post by Smartalex Wed Apr 03, 2013 10:49 pm

I'm currently reading a condensation of Don Quijote de la Mancha by Cervantes...in Spanish. I don't remember it being so friggin funny in English. Seems to me I remember reading a tragic tale of a broken-down and delusional old man in the English version. Seems to me it made a boring-ass movie and an equally boring stage play. I was surprised to find the humor and sarcasm in the Spanish version.

Well, that didn´t take long.

In case there is any hope of keeping this thread on books: I am reading "Light of Day" by Jamie M. Saul. It is a powerful and well-written first novel.

Just got my Kindle in the middle of March and am reading a backlog of Michael Connelly's books. On the seventh one called "Lost Light". There are five more and then I'm up to date. After that I'm going to read The Great War for Civilization by Robert Fisk...hubby should be finished with it by then.

hockables, don´t know about now but there used to be really good stories in Playboy. Some serious reading there. I gave the former Mr. Latté a subscription so I could read them. As for Penthouse, all I can remember is The Penthouse Forum. Ewwwww.
Thank you, viajero. It was a funny digression but had potential to go south rapidly.

Currently reading "Bedlam Burning", by Geoff Nicholson. (Had to go look.) I needed a fluff read so grabbed it from the LCS Library. Mildly amusing piece of shit for the first 100 pages but then it became so annoying I almost threw it into the pooper.

In response to the ready-for-the-pooper book, I just grabbed "The World is Flat" by Thomas Friedman from a friend's library on Easter. Some junk about globalization and whatnot. I'll either start that next or maybe re-read "Life and Times of Mexico" by Earl Shorris.

Loved Poisonwood Bible, by the way. The Lacuna is a good read too - and relates to Mexico - but Poisonwood Bible is her best book for sure.

Anybody like the "Outlander" stuff? Somebody was trying to force that on me the other day. Never read any of it.

Ever go to Magana´s Cafe and enjoy his library? Just bring some books you are finished with and trade them for new (to you) ones. LOTS of books to choose from and I have gotten some REALLY good ones there. I go and order lunch or dinner and preuse the shelves while I wait.

The Last Assassin, 5th in the John Rain series by Barry Eisler. A freelance assassin who wants out of the game. Usually lots of great description of Japan, places, culture, business.

Eisler, an author who hasn't passed all his work on to his research/writing staff yet... unlike Stuart Woods and others who used to be good.

I love to read and get all my books from Cafe Magana and because of the snowbirds, they are right now overflowing and have some good stuff. I've given up looking for specific authors and just grab things off the shelves, usually based on cool titles or book covers. More often than not, i've discovered some fabulous new (to me) authors and books.

Just finished "Random Family" by Adiana Nichole LeBlanc, about coming of age in the Bronx in the 1980s/1990s. Non-fiction, but the author does an amazing job of setting out a case study that reads like a novel.

Also recently read "The Lacuna" by Barbara Kingsolver (mentioned above) which I found fascinating because of its links to Mexico during the 1930's. But agree that Barbara Kingsolver's best (and she has other really good ones) is 'The Poisonwood Bible."

If you like mysteries, may I recommend Harlan Coben, Lee Child, Lisa Gardner, and Ruth Rendell, all of whom tell fascinating stories....and all of whom I have read in the past month. And anything by Jonathan Kellerman or Faye Kellerman is good.

My "fun" reading always includes Maeve Binchy who writes about Ireland.

If you're in Magana's and find yourself always going over to the Mystery/Thriller section, try the bookcase by the window on the same side as the kitchen. Some great stuff in there!

I've lived here for five years and have yet to purchase a book. Cafe Magana's selection, with the addition of books from friends, have kept me going that long!

My gorsh what an erudite bunch! I'm reading "The Skies of Pern", one of Anne McCaffrey's last books. Dragons and feudal society mixed up with science fiction. Ferret - I love Michael Connelly's books, we have most of them if you need to borrow one (and will faithfully return it...).

Rosa Venus...the Outlander by Diana Gabaldon is the first of a series. I loved all of them. If you like historical fiction then you'll like these. A tremendous amount of research went into these books. Love story, mystery, history...just doesn't get any better than that combo for me.

Thanks for the offer Holdrja...I've read them all and have the last five "in the cloud" to download.
