Shaw Direct "Home Away From Home" program.
Received this info from Shaw:
Shaw Direct currently does have a program called the “Home Away from Home” which allows services to be taken with you to your seasonal property such as your cottage in addition to services at your home. This would include services for both locations under one bill and one program. Would you be setting up an account at your Canadian home as well? Or would you be using the service only in Mexico? To be qualified for our HAFH promotion, there are some general terms of service we need to go over. The program itself is based on the premise that you have ownership or registration in some way of both locations.
If you are registering a stationary location such as your cottage in the US or Mexico, the only thing we need from you is a copy of one of either a utility bill, or land deed, or property tax assessment, faxed into 1-866-782-7006 (make sure to include your account number and a phone number we can reach you at on the fax). The bill (or other document) must show your name (or your spouse’s name) with the cabin address on it. Once we have received this we will be able to ship you a brand new dish and one cable for no cost if this is your first dish or for just $99.00 if this would be your second dish. If you already have a dish or if you’re able to purchase the dish elsewhere then by all means, feel free to do so. You may take an existing receiver with you back and forth to the cottage or if you would like to purchase and additional unit, our entry level HD receiver is $49.99. Please let us know if you require additional equipment or if you already have receivers.
Finally, prior to registering I must make you aware that the HAFH services are intended for recreational use only. This means that only one location (ie: the cabin/RV or your primary address) can you used at a time. For example, if you are at your cabin location and your spouse is at home only one of you should be watching TV; we do not shut one location off and turn the other on, rather we trust that you will respect the rules and regulations set forth by the CRTC.
We can ship the equipment to any Canadian address. We recommend the bigger 75cm E-dish for service in Mexico which would come with the new LNB however the new LNB is not compatible with our 3rd satellite that was recently launched. You will still have access to the first two satellites we have, which is where the bulk of the programming will be. We do require you to register your primary Canadian address for the account however so if you would to proceed, please see below for the information we require:
Full Name:
Canadian Physical Address:
Canadian Billing Address (if different from above):
Home Away from Home Address (fax required):
Phone Number:
Receivers you’d like:
Programming package you’d like to have:
Other authorized users:

In regards to the receivers, for our promotions right now, we are offering our DSR600 for $49.99 (retail $99.99) and our DSR605 for $199.99. With the purchase of the DSR 600, we would apply a $50.00 PPV credit and a $50.00 programming credit to your account and with the purchase of our DSR605, you would receive a $50.00 PPV coupon only. If you are interested in our DVR630 receiver, we are offering a buyout at $299.99 with a $50 programming credit and a $50.00 PPV credit. If you are starting up services in Canada as well, we will be happy to send a technician out to your location to install the 4 units plus any cables/dish components (that may need to be updated) for $0.00! If you only require regular boxes, all our units are HD ready and we’d recommend our DSR600 for $49.99 each.

David, is there something to be gained by us? I did find out we can suspend our Shaw for up to 6 months while traveling, restart for 24 hours and suspend again.

Re: Shaw Direct "Home Away From Home" program.
I was curious about the whys and wherefores, in particular the new satellite. As they point out in a roundabout sort of way, "... the new LNB is not compatible with our 3rd satellite that was recently launched."... which is misleading, I believe... it is that we cannot get the signal here. I'm sure the LNB works just fine up in Canada.

I think Pete said the new bird will require a new LNB although the footprint may not include us, so the point may be moot.

Cost of Shaw for hours viewed is getting out a sight, I have platinum package, plus super channels, bill is $130.00 USD month. My Direct TV in US is $75.00.
Anyone know what size dish is needed to receive direct tv?

Yes, and that is the LNB to which Shaw was referring, which is why their answer was very misleading.

Jim:
Hopefully your Direct TV pkg NOB isn't a promo package? If so you will be in for a real surprise when the promo time period ends! We did that a few years back bundled with Quest now Century Link. They really stuck it to us with the premium channels and NFL pkg.

Yes you can. Streaming quality will depend on your internet connection speed.
Re: Shaw Direct "Home Away From Home" program.
Jim,
To receive DirecTV in Mexico requires an 8 foot dish. If you want all the HD, you have to have three LNBs mounted on the dish.

Orios, do you know who provides this set up? Approx. cost? This is of great interest, cause I have direct tv at home, and using same receivers saves paying for shaw...
Thanks again orios.

Neil, I think you posted a warning about this sometime back, and we took your advice, sent Direct TV email, following up by telephone, we didn't want freebee NFL etc., even then they billed us, and ended up giving credit. I don't have a clue why the marketing execs @ direct tv and others, that we want a price, pay our bill and get on with life, rather dealing with their marketing scams. JUST SAYIN

Two companies that we will never do business with again: Direct TV & Verizon. Both because of shoddy marketing and business practices!
I will admit to enjoying the NFL Pkg when we had Direct TV.

Every Denver Bronco game not only gets watched but also recorded for repeat viewing but they are considered to be one of our local teams, so they are virtually always on our local channel.

Re: Shaw Direct "Home Away From Home" program.
Jim,
CP electronics (cp-electronics.com) is one of the sources for the 8' dish, the LNBs and mounting rack. I think Merryman at Ajijic Electronics also carries the dish.
If you want an 8' dish, I know of one that was just taken off of a roof in lower San Antonio. They left the base because it was cemented to the roof so it will probably be very reasonable. I also know the name and number of a manufacturer of 8' dishes on the way up to guadalajara where the base can be purchased separately for a reasonable amount. If you are interested let me know and I will give you the contact numbers.
I also know of someone who has the mounting rack and LNBs for sale but they are asking almost as much as CP Electronics.

Thanks Orios, Do you know anyone that has installed Direct TV @ Lakeside. I'd like to see their install, and hear their experience relative to rain fade. Also earlier in thread I was led to believe it might require a 10" dish?
TIA

I think a 10 inch dish will be too small. I've heard an 8 foot dish does it just fine. I would expect more rain fade that with Shaw though.

Re: Shaw Direct "Home Away From Home" program.
Sadly the largest Ku band dishes readily available at reasonable prices are the 2.4 meter or almost 8 feet in diameter. Sadly for a more reliable setup you need a larger Ku band dish.
I have DirecTV Ku using a 2.4 meter dish with 3 LNBs allowing me to look at 3 satellites. I don't know much about how poorly it works during inclement weather because I probably watch it 4 hours per week at best and I haven't had it that long. I usually watch Shaw and digital Telecable (channels 100 to 999) which even has a few channels in HD.
Your welcome to take a look Jim. You know where I live. Most any afternoon between 2:30 and 4 PM would be great.
Oh both Satellite systems (Mike and Mario) and www.cp-electronics.com do a good job.
