Tequila questions.
Friends have asked us to bring 'Good Quality Tequila' with us when we visit them overseas.
As neither of us drink Tequila, we don't know what 'Good quality' entails...suggestions welcome.
Second part of question...would the airlines allow us to bring this booze onto an overseas flight?
Or...would it be easier just to pick up the Tequila at an airport Duty-Free shop, and collect it at the destination?
Your input appreciated.

First of all, ask them if they prefer blancos, reposados, or añejos. I like the Herradura Blanco and Reposado. Another brand I enjoy is Siete Leguas.
I'm sure others will chime in with their preferred brands.

I'm a cheap date. I like Compadre. Technically it's not a tequila because it's made in Oaxaca.

Re: Tequila questions.
This is going to be difficult I have heard from some wealthy Mexicans that the best Tequila comes from Arandas, north of Guadalajara. Now I am hearing the City of Tepatitlan, 70 km north of Guadalajara. A beautiful Colonial City near the Rio Verde nature reserve. Here is an article as to why it is the best. A great and memorable road trip, that we hope to take once our dog is settled.

Re: Tequila questions.
The Herradura and Siete Leguas (Seven Leagues, the name of Pancho Villa's horse) are fine choices. They are among my favorites. Another is Gonzalez by the former owners of Don Julio. If you buy the tequila here then simply pack it in your checked luggage. You'll have more choices here than your departure airport for overseas unless that happens to be Mexico City.casi nada wrote:Nosnow wrote:Friends have asked us to bring 'Good Quality Tequila' with us when we visit them overseas.

Re: Tequila questions.
Yes, Paz does carry El Tesoro de Mi Tierra...in blanco, reposado and anejo. Hubby's favourite is the anejo in the hand blown glass bottle with the glass stopper top. The bottle itself is worth having...irridescent glass. Soak off the label and use it as a water container for the bathroom or a decanter for other liquids. Hubby says it's a nice sipping Tequila and very reasonably priced for the quality.

Re: Tequila questions.
I like Mezcal my self, but for a margarita I prefer the Herradura Blanco.
My wife likes the Herradura Reposada for tequila and tonic.
And I agree with David. Buy it here and put it in your luggage. Duty Free does not carry the best selections, or the best prices.

Re: Tequila questions.
I don't know - the lengths I go to to keep people on this forum in the know. I went out to La Paz and bought a .750 bottle of Carmesi for 234 pesos. I just sampled a couple of fingers after lunch. It really is different, but recognizable. It reminds me of a premium dessert wine, except no sweetness and the fire of tequila.
Very attractive packaging. Taste tuned to appeal to women (those who drink sipping Tequila that is!) as selected by the only woman owned Tequileria in Mexico. Good story there for someone.

La Paz? In Bolivia or Baja California? Or did you mean PAZ Vinos y Licores? PAZ is the family name of the owner.

Re: Tequila questions.
Wow..so many helpful suggestions.
Now that we know that the best deals, and the greatest selections, are outside of the Duty-Free, we'll be investigating the many brands mentioned here.
Gracias to y'all.

Re: Tequila questions.
you mean mouth blown, pretty impossible to do that with your hand.there are several brands and types available at 'paz' liquor store and most that are in a mouth blown bottle look pretty and are generally of good quality.ferret wrote:Yes, Paz does carry El Tesoro de Mi Tierra...in blanco, reposado and anejo. if you are going to get one of those[with a cork or glass stopper] be sure to check it holding upside down. some are prone to leak and some of the bottles are too delicate for travel.
paz has got the widest choice of tequila that i have ever seen and a few interesting oaxaca mescals[they ain't cheap] because they are limited production. they also have that cheap tourist crap that has the worm in it-SNORK!

Re: Tequila questions.
No, I think they still call it hand blown glass. You are thinking of something else......jajajaja.
Let Mr. Google show you the way.

Re: Tequila questions.
my "creds" in the antique business tell me mouth blown is correct. you cannot blow something with your hand but you can do other things with 5 digits and a palm. as a retired school teacher ,yvonne would have slapped her student upside the head in the old days for suggesting glass is "hand" blown.
mouth blown implies that you have done it personally through a tube and not my using machinery and a tube.
sometimes you can see the mouth blowing of glass at the art shows here. the hand is merely used to hold the tube.

There ya go!! Is Walmart/Bodega the only place that sells it? Smooth and cheap
Re: Tequila questions.
Just one word of caution to the OP, if you are travelling through the US on your way to another country, you cannot buy any alcoholic beverages at Duty Free in GDL to carry on to the plane. It will be confiscated by US Customs folks upon landing at a US airport. You have to buy it ahead of time and take it in your checked bags.

Re: Tequila questions.
This is a good point , we bought Tequila in the duty free in Mexico , they gave it to us on the plane and when we tried to board the plane to France we were told we could not have the Tequila. The AA agents were very nice, they found a box packed it for us and checked it as luggage, miracle of miracle the tequila arrived without any breakage in Paris but without the nice agents we would have had to give up the Tequila in the US.
