Rain gutters
Rain gutters
Coming from the land of perpetual rain I am used to a place that is properly equipped for the torrential down pours. That means having rain gutters instead of waterfalls at the roofs edge.
I haven't looked before but has anyone seen any rain gutters available locally or at Home Depot?

Re: Rain gutters
i have yet to see any casa with rain gutters, but hey, i ain't seen them all.
when we re-roofed,i hade them extend the patio roof further out so that the water now comes down on the gravel instead of the patio. when it pours -i merely sprint through the waterfall and so do the dogs
addendum:whoops i forgot that we needed something at the bottom end of the staircase roof so the water wouldn't hit the guest room wall. it was a trough made by a tinsmith and the water runs out of it through 4 inch[?] pvc pipe.

Well you are going to see the first one here I guess. I have seen gutters on other places down here. In fact, I already have a gutter on a small portion of my roof that the last owner installed.

Re: Rain gutters
Yeah I already thought of that however I would prefer some factory made gutters if possible. If not I will have a metal shop bend me some out of galvanized sheet metal I suppose.
Re: Rain gutters
Keeping the runoff out of the pool might be a challenge at times. Rerouting our pool decking makes pool maintenance easier. Really hated the green glob look after a heavy rain. Major YUK!

Re: Rain gutters
My pool has a high edge around it so that isn't a problem. Now where can I get some gutters?

They also show connectors and downspout units.

Cool CG. I always have problems navigating that Home Dept website. Looks like I'll be heading there.

IMHO, rain gutters look out of place here and spoil the looks of the property.

I have also seen gutters carved from cantera stone, which would fit the architecture. If that might be of interest, I have addresses/websites for a number of large Cantera Stone fabricators in the greater Guadalajara area.

Re: Rain gutters
Lots of houses have gutters and lots do not. The extruded gutters look horrible and are undersized for the torrential downpour. We had a 20 foot one and it lasted one season. The larger and squared locally made gutters are better suited for the rain and look better on the house.

The guy that built my Casita a couple of months ago cut a large-diameter PVC pipe in half and got an ironworker to fashion four brackets that he attached under the tile-line. Worked quite well this weekend.

We too have the halved PVC and fashioned ironwork for a cutter on a part of the second story of our house. Works fine we've been in our house for 7+ years and haven't had any problems with it.

Re: Rain gutters
If your roof has an edge rim of any size you can channel the water to where you want it to come down and then only use a downspout. That's assuming a flat or nearly roof
Re: Rain gutters
You guys are no fun - why not build what was the prototype for the Toblandia water park?

Re: Rain gutters
I have sloped tile roofs and on one house I had canales installed linked to a downpour linked to the street. Any metal guy can make those .
In one service building I had a metal guy cut pvc in half and supports made for it, the whole thing is painted black, and I have a rain chain , the water goes on a service patio that has a drain linked to the street.
On the flat roof the water just goes down the house outsede wall and I have gravel taking the rain to a channel linked to a dry well.

Re: Rain gutters
Pre-made gutters are far too small for our heavy rains.
CB I think you have yet to experience a rainy season so maybe you need to wait and see. Some areas may need it and some not. We have never had a problem as we tend not to go out late at night and a little water around in the morning does not bother us.

Jaja.....I've been here FT for over a year so I must have seen the rains by now. No?
Thanks for the tips Brigitte. I'll find a metal bender to make me some.

Were you not back in Canada for most of the rainy season last year. It was puny anyway. You should have been here for 2010

Re: Rain gutters
Having visited Bob and Sharon's home, it might be helpful to this conversation for people to look at the roof style seen in the banner ad for the studio casita. You will note that the roof along the front of the casita is comprised of roof tiles that basically dump water along the entire leading edge. A collector to redirect the rain water would definitely enhance one's experience when entering or exiting the casita!

I was in Canada for the last part of August and September. There was plenty of rain June, July and October.DaveP wrote:CanuckBob wrote:DaveP wrote:Pre-made gutters are far too small for our heavy rains.

Re: Rain gutters
DavidP is right the regular size gutter are small for the huge downpours but they work most of the time. We have downpours here but we have waterfalls in Chiapas, fortunately they do not last very long as a rule so the regular gutters work most of the time This year we had lots of rain and thunderstorms with tons of hail and we those all bets are off even the patios have to be watch for flooding and the streets are impossible to cross..In that situation there is no other solution but make a nice margarita and wait for the thing to be over..
