hungry horses

While out for a walk yesterday I came across a corral of horses at the top of Encarnacion in Ajijic, just above the Secondaria.

Those horses appear to be starving to death. Not just every rib but every hip bone and spinal bump is showing. Ironically several of them are fenced into an area with grass directly outside that they can't get to.

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether anything can be done? I know that new laws against animal abuse went into effect last November but have no idea if they are enforced or where to report the negligence.

Or maybe something has happened to the owners...? I just can't imagine anyone letting such a major investment in horses waste away, regardless of how they feel about animals.

Report it to the various animal groups they may know what to do. And Antonio Ladron was active in animal rights, you may want to go talk to him at their vet clinic.

Great ideas. I have talked to the animal sanctuary that Gudrun is involved with and they are going to see what they can do.

I am almost wondering if the owner thought the horses would be OK on their own during the rainy season, that grass would grow and their troughs would refill from the rain. But with so little rain it hasn't worked that way.

Not a great explanation, but I'm just mystified how anyone could let this happen, for economic reasons as much as humane ones.

No they dont think that, they just dont give a crap.

So, they do not have water? because that is the real emergency.

I can't tell if they have water. There are two large troughs but I can't see inside of them from outside the fence.
