Many under 55?
I am making my second trip down to lakeside this winter and staying for 5 months. I was down for a month last November and liked what I saw. I am in the fortunate position to take an early retirement and want to really see what is like to stay down there for an extended length of time.
I noticed that Canuckbob just turned 50 (happy birthday:30: )which kind of surprised me (not that you're not a young looking guy Bob) because it looked to me that most everyone there was over 55/65/75 etc. Not that there is anything wrong with that as all of my current friends are in their 50's, 60's and 70's. (jeees, I just keep digging myself in deeper)
I guess I was just wondering if there are there many others under 55 living there?
Okay, signing off now.
Oh, BTW I am 47 (soon 48)

You'll get over it. It's the age of the heart that matters. Interestingly, we are close with 3 Mexican couples all in their 30s. We're 59 and 70. Go figure! Most of our friends are 55-75 but who cares?

Re: Many under 55?
Oh, I agree. It doesn't bother me any. Many of the older crowd can out do me and out party me 7 days a week.
I guess I was just a little surprised to see someone else making the retirement move before 50 and was curious as to how many more were there.
Looking forward to getting down there. Only 11 more sleeps.

Re: Many under 55?
There are a lot of people here under 55. You just have to look for them. The older crowd is in bed by 8:00pm so anytime after that, at the bars, is where you'll find the young'un's....jajaja.
I have some friends visiting right now that are in their mid-forties and they are looking at making the move soon.
Anyhow, look me up when you are in town and I'll show you a few......

Well...I am shocked. I honestly expected the reply "Not very many!"
I am looking a lake Chapala with different eyes now and looking forward to meeting some of you young'ens.
Moved down at 43 eh? Now I'm starting to feel old. :-)

Re: Many under 55?
I moved here at 54, choosing early retirement. Be aware that many old timers here will regard anyone under 60 or 65 with suspiscion. Basic math says if you draw pension income at a younger age your income is reduced. But if you appear to be less than well off you are branded a con artist, hiding from the law, etc etc. not by all but by enough. I often add ten years to my age when asked just to avoid the "look". Might sound bitter, I am in a mood today.
Edited to add I know expats from early 20's, thirties, fourties, fifties and up. My experience is that more under 50's are moving here this past year or so.

Re: Many under 55?
I totally disagree Grizzy.
Maybe those in their 20's or 30's are regarded with a bit of suspicion (i.e. why are they living in Mexico when they could be earning money NOB) however there are lots of people (particularly Canadians) cashing in on big real estate money while in their 40's and 50's. I have never felt that somebody was "suspicious" of us and we have been hanging out here since my early 40's.

Then too are the couples with big age differences, e.g. when we moved here my wife was 50 and I was 62.

Re: Many under 55?
What I am trying to understand is why "the fact" you present is in this thread. Are you saying that people are more "suspicious" of "younger" people when there is a "big" age difference between a couple?

Fact one: My wife is younger than me
Fact two: Some "younger" people arrive here with an "older spouse."

Re: Many under 55?
I am not being deliberately recalcitrant. I really am trying to understand what you meant by your post.
The thread is about people arriving here at a younger-than-average age. A comment was made about some people being suspicious of the younger people. You posted, “Then too are the couples with big age differences, e.g. when we moved here my wife was 50 and I was 62.”
Are you saying that people are MORE suspicious or LESS suspicious of the "mixed age" couple? Or are you saying it is easier or more difficult to fit in when one member of the couple is noticeably older (or younger)?

Re: Many under 55?
I feel like the op is being given the wrong impression.
I am 52, and moved here five years ago. I could be wrong, but it seems to me "under 55" people represent a very small percentage of the retired foreign population living here. Sure there are some here, and maybe you could even call it many, but I wouldn't, at least not on a percentage basis.
Then again, maybe it's just that they're all hiding from me, and I don't often go out to the bars at night, so what do I know.
Of course, if the op is talking about the entire population here, not just foreigners, then that's completely different. The question was never clear to me.

I know the ages have changed, but has the difference changed?David wrote:Then too are the couples with big age differences, e.g. when we moved here my wife was 50 and I was 62.
Is it still big or less or more moderate?

Re: Many under 55?
I would be more concerned with the number of whack jobs living here versus whether they are young or old. I'm thinking 50%.....maybe 60%.........jajajaja.
Re: Many under 55?
whack jobs like me, of the pleasant sort, never age. the other sort eventually get sorted out, appropriately.
