Re: parsnips
Chirivía.....try the guy at the Tues. market at La Huerta, who sells vegetables, a little to the left as you walk in the main entrance. He said he is trying grow some. A week ago, he had some really nice nabos (turnips). I told him I would bring him back some parsnip seeds from Ireland on my next trip over.itsme wrote:Anyone have an idea where, or even if, these are available to buy around here?

Stay away from those long white roots that Pancho/Super Lake sometimes has and he thinks that they are parsnips. They are some kind of Japanese radish.
The only other parsnips I have found (occasionally) were at the Mega opposite Galerias in Guad., but they were pretty sorry.

Re: parsnips
Pancho probably has daikon. A beef stew with cubed daikon like the chinese make is great.

Re: parsnips
The guy I mentioned in the earlier post had chirivía (parsnips) at the Tues. market yesterday at La Huerta. Picked up 4 nice sized ones and they still had the fresh green tops so they were reciente.
Going to make a batch of parsnip-turnip-carrot mash with cabbage for a sort of colcannon.

That could be very tasty--or really awful. I can not decide which.

Re: parsnips
For some reason the ones I bought at the Tuesday market are totally tasteless. Not worth the gas to cook them.

For the best taste, they have to eaten this way.....an old Irish recipe...
One pint of Guinness before eating, one pint of Guinness while eating, and one pint of Guinness after eating.

Re: parsnips
Parsnips really need to go through a freeze to bring out their flavor. They have to be grown in a northern climate to be at their best. Sigh.brigitte wrote:For some reason the ones I bought at the Tuesday market are totally tasteless. Not worth the gas to cook them.

Re: parsnips
I have read one can store them at around 30 - 32 degrees F for a week or two and that will do it.Luisa wrote:Parsnips really need to go through a freeze to bring out their flavor. Re: parsnips
I will try that but usually fruit or veggies that grow fast because of the warmer weather do not have any flavor so I wonder if putting them in the fridge after they are grown will do anything, I will have to try that , I sure hope it will help..

Hunger works well as a motivator, thirst also provides incentives.slainte39 wrote:
