WalMart Promo Apple Mini iPad 16 GB 3999 pesos

Walmart is having a Promo on several electronic things.
They have the Apple mini iPad 16 GB for 3999 pesos and they also have the Apple mini iPad-2 for 6999 pesos. I don't know what the difference is.

Big signs out front with all the promos. It said iPad mini 16 GB 3999. I went inside and the man took the 3999 pesos iPad out of the case and I ask him if 3999 was the total price and he said yes. We bought one in a little Apple store on a ship, duty free and we paid about $350.00 U.S. mas or menus. I think 3999 pesos is a great price here. But there must be some difference between the 3999 iPad and the 6999 one, but with the language barrier I didn't go into that.

Please tell me you understand that the item is made for WalMart, using their specifications. You get what you pay for unless it comes from WalMart.

So these Apple iPads were not made by Apple? I thought no one could make an Apple except Apple. Or does Apple make iPads for WalMart not as good as the ones in the states. I'm a little confused.

When it comes to retail and retailers - things are very rarely created equal!

I think iPads are not meant to have a lot of storage. You keep your stuff on the cloud and link to your other electronic devices. From what I have read about pricing, Apple controls that and "allows" only small discounts of no more than 10%. The really "good deals" you see are older models. This is fine--as long as you know what you are buying.

The reality of today's retail climate as Flamingo alluded is that retailers, especially the large ones, baffle the consumer with their BS! The manufacturers are complicit in this scam since they are willing to provide larger retailers with their own specs, so they can make price guarantees and your average retail customer hasn't a clue. Once a retailer essentially has an "exclusive on a product", then they can inflate the MSRP and make sale prices look even better.

Just the other night a person I know was rushing to K-Mart because they were advertising 70% off on jewelry. Admittedly I let it go because I knew that I would never be able to explain why they were still achieving a 3x markup at 70% off. I am guessing that he thought they were getting a heck of a deal when that was K-Mart's pricing strategy all along.

Are you still talking about Apple? They do not give anyone exclusives on selling their products.
What I am most interested in is the statement that Apple makes computers to different specs for Walmart so they can sell them cheaper. I have never heard that before and wonder if it is true. This is just curiosity on my part. I am not shopping for a computer and would not buy one from Walmart if I was.

I have no idea regarding WalMart and Apple but I do know that Car Rental companies get vehicles made to different specs than the general public is able to purchase. If you are ever considering purchasing a former rental car it can be an issue as you will assume that the "Model X" is equipped as other "Model X" vehicles are - not necessarily. Due diligence is required.

Sorry but I cannot provide you with proof positive that Apple is making side deals with WallyWorld , however I would peg the odds at greater than 90%. Back "in the day" (what a joke that phrase is), I was a sales rep and then national sales manager for a company who controlled retail pricing when it was technically illegal. While we could never exert pressure for failure to maintain pricing policies - we could use tactics like losing their orders, refusing orders based on their choice of dog breeds or the fact that their wife wasn't attractive. Retail at the big box or department store level has been bastardized with so many side deals! Have you ever heard of "guaranteed markdowns"? These are side agreements between suppliers/manufacturers which guarantee a retailer a certain margin no matter what price they sell for. These are achieved through rebates or credit towards future merchandise.

Cheena, I was not looking for proof positive, just a little more about something more on the topic. Are you saying that Apple would make computers to lower specs so a place like Walmart can maintain a certain profit margin and therefore Apple products are different depending upon where you purchase them? I have been aware of side deals on prices but always assumed it was on the same product.

Zed's article was a very good example of some of the common misdirects that go on in the retail business. Most are designed to prey on gullible and uninformed consumers.

One of the greatest scams experiencing a great deal of popularity these days is Outlet Stores! These stores were originally started as an outlet for excess first line merchandise. With the success of the early Outlet Malls came the construction of new malls and outlet store opportunities. Suddenly these suppliers didn't have merchandise in adequate quantities and they saw an opportunity to produce lesser quality merchandise and increase their profits while playing off the reputation of their label.

I can remember when the rare outlet store was a source for good deals on quality merchandise. After they started showing up everywhere (including whole outlet shopping centers) even I recognized the con. Still, outlet center shopping is very popular.

I know that Costco has computers made to their specific spec....usually better then what you can buy at bestbuy etc

And that is why Costco enjoys a reputation of being a customer friendly company!

Heard the cheap ones have no SIM slot for real/3G Internet.   Can connect to WiFi if that works
