Pepe needs our help!!

Pepe (from Pepe & Aurora's restaurant) is very sick. He has discovered he has stomach cancer on top of the other illnesses he has been suffering. He needs treatment that will cost about $32,000 pesos. He has already put down $10,000 pesos but needs to get $22,000 more. He is not looking for donations but what he would like to do is get as many people as possible to pay for some meals and drinks in advance. He will issue a "debit card" that can be used to pay for any meals and drinks there until the amount is used up. I plan on taking $1000 pesos in advance meal payments.

Please help if you can. Pepe is a good guy!!!

I am going there for dinner tonight, and then I will also buy a 1000 peso debit card.   

Perfect Zen. Tell him we are getting the word around. I also asked him to ensure Aurora knows the plan as he has to go in for some preliminary treatments over the next few days and probably won't be at work.

I stopped in and talked to Pepe when I was walking the dog this afternoon.
Aurora knows all about the debit card arrangement.
He will be going to the doctor tomorrow to find out more details and times of his treatment.
He needs to keep a positive attitude about the whole process, and going to the restaurant and letting him know that he has our support will help a lot.

My wife and I are in for 750p. She'll see Aurora later this afternoon.

Does he have either Seguro Popular or IMSS insurance to cover the cost of his treatment?
IMSS has a waiting period for pre-existing conditions, but as far as I know, Seguro Popular is available without one.  It is very inexpensive or free, depending on income.

BTW, we all run the risk of serious illness and should be prepared to deal with it financially. "Cross your fingers" insurance results in situations like the above.

Here hoping Pepe's treatment is successful and wishing him and Aurora the best.

Has he contacted Seguro Popular ? Intercasa had a post at the top telling what they cover.

I would think he would know all that is available to him being he is Mexican and plugged into the community however I will ask him when I see him.

Would his pre-existing condition exclude him?

You never know. There are many people who just aren't thinking about what to do if they fall it. Our small contractor guy (who has IMSS for himself and all his workers) has an mom who fell and broke her leg this last year. The family hasn't enough money for it, but they took her to the Hospital de Carmen, ended up with a large bill, and our contractor was going around borrowing money to bail her out. Seguro Popular? What's that?
The good news is that momma is okay and he paid us back.

I spoke to Pepe this afternoon. He will find out tomorrow at 9:00 just when his surgery will be.
He is in good spirits and has a more positive outlook.    

I was there yesterday, only diner in the restaurant but it was early. Pepe was in Guad getting tests prior to his operation. I had to explain to the waiter who is helping out while Pepe is gone what this was all about, but we did get the job done. I have a card with $1000 p donation noted, they will subtract food and drink I consume. Left tip extra. At least when he got home yesterday he had 1000 p he did not have before.

Went by today and spoke to Pepe.
His tests from yesterday were positive, and the surgery should be performed soon.
He has had some good responses from our postings, and has a good attitude.
I will be cashing in all my debit cards for margaritas.
And drinking to Pepe's good health.     

Went to his restaurant last night. There was one other table occupied when we got there. After they left, we were alone. Spoke to Pepe he said he was in poor shape, that his insides were 'all messed up'. We tried to cheer him up, and I bought a 1000 peso card from him. Let's all have positive thoughts for him as I believe he goes under the knife tomorrow.

Peteben mentioned that he believed Pepe was having surgery on Monday. Does anyone know if indeed Pepe had the surgery on Monday?

Monday afternoon he was still waiting for a phone call to schedule the surgery for this week.   

Any update on Pepe? Does he still need money?
