Chapala trash can project Empty Chapala trash can project

Post by Intercasa Tue May 27, 2014 12:37 pm

I have noticed that people seem to toss trash everywhere and often there is no place to deposit their rubbish. I talked to the municipality and they have no problem with me buying a trash can and having it bolted down on the street corner in front of my place to give people a place to throw away their trash instead of on the ground. I went to Coldwell Banker and asked who did GIL buy the cans from and they are checking but also liked the idea and think they will sponsor a can and I think the notary 5 will as well so anybody else out there want to do this? If we buy more we can get a good price and clean up Chapala.

I have no idea, I know the prior administration bought cans but the current one doesn´t know, I have a call into the GIL to see what they paid. I hope with more people we can get a better price, I will post once I know.

I would suggest a large trash bag in the barrel and, as a luxury feature, a secured top (chain etc.) with a swinging door to keep the flies to a minimum.Place a few replacement bags in the barrel and then open the user bag over them.

Another request for price, please. Our street gets a lot of "picnicking".

Juanita Reed's litter project has been revived. The group starts and ends at the intersection of Pancho Villa every Sat from 10:00 to 11:30

Newin, I think your notice would get more attention if you started a new thread about Juanita´s litter project.

I wouldn't recommend those plastic cans GIL used. People throw cigarettes into them, the trash catches fire and melts and destroys the can. About a third of them have been ruined in Ajijic that way.

My suggestion is metal cans and sponsors get to put their name and business phone on them.

We're trying to get something going in Ajijic to replace the many ruined plastic cans with something more durable of metal, hopefully fabricated by one or more of our local businesses. As noted, the idea would be for businesses to sponsor them and be able to put the business name and phone on them. They would follow a standard format and color.

Be careful what you buy. Mainecoon is correct.  While the small plastic cans on the concrete poles in Ajijic looked nice and took up little space  they did not work out as well as expected.  The wrong decision could be expensive. I like the plastic 2/3 sized 55 gallon drums.  Paint them up and put long chain on em and chain em to something.
have artists paint them up or stores paint stuff on the drum in front.  One does have to deal with the theft problem. Ajijic has had many stolen in addition to the fire problem.

Yes, those plastic cans cost around $100 U.S. I really wonder whether we could have some local fabricator make them out of steel, with a mesh bottom, for less, and keep the money here. The plastic ones are imported, I believe.

That looks like a great price. I assume you would bolt them to the sidewalk with concrete lags?

"Who would supply and replace the trash bags?"

Probably the same person who picked up the trash before scattered about.

Those are great trash cans, I live on the other side of the lake and may have to try this project over there too. Thanks for caring Spencer.
