Speaking of Weather in Mexico

It suddenly dawned on me just how rarely one sees any honesty on the travel websites about the weather at various times of the year in various regions of Mexico. After all, why not just repeat the RE Agent's mantra that it only rains at night? And then there are those who assume that the weather in all of Mexico is the same as the center of the universe in Ajijic. Thew fact of the matter is that Mexico has numerous climatological regions and when people use generalizations, they are doing others a disservice! For years we got away with an annual trip in August without the weather disrupting plans. This all changed two years ago when we expanded our travel horizons and visited Oaxaca and Puebla. Not only did we experience a cuota wiped out by a landslide leaving Oaxaca but also had a day of solid rain in Puebla. I had to admit that in all my reviews on TripAdvisor, I have failed to mention the possible negative impact of weather. From now on, I plan to include that aspect where appropriate.

I suspect Mexico is one of the most environmentally diverse countries in the world. It is not unusual to get snow in Coahuila.

Hmmm so far in Upper Ajijic the rain has been at night. We have had a couple of drizzle storms during the day and one modest rain. So according to my weather system it does tend to rain here more during night than day. Any body else got some rain records for
Ajijic?

We certainly had our share of daytime rain last year. In September it rained for almost a week straight when those two hurricanes hit landfall.

usually when hurricanes hit the Pacific we can have rain during the day however during the rainy seasson the rains are usually in the evening or night.

When a storm comes thru it rains whenever it feels like it. Lately it's late afternoon and evenings

Around Easter tis year the traffic between Toluca and Santa Fe came to a total stop as people got caught in a storm, thre was so much ice that noone could drive ...Thanks for the link, it shows how beautiful and diverse Mexico is.

I truly had no idea that anywhere in Mexico would look like a winter wonderland.

One day we had to leave the city of Oaxaca as the maestros were preventin gthe water trucks from trfilling the cisterns in the center, so we got a cabin way up in the sierra in one of the pueblo malcomunados, we arrived in a place that could have been Alaska..we left because it was freezing cold with wind blowing etc..it was breathtakingly beautiful and freezing cold ..

Take a look at all the assumptions or generalizations that come out of people's mouths with respect to weather in almost any large country. After all, everywhere in Mexico is located either along the Caribbean or the Pacific and every city or town has a salt water beach. It never gets below 100 degrees in Arizona. There is only one State in the US located on the Pacific Ocean. And the list goes on.

The point of my original post is that while Mexico has a reputation for what we might define as good weather but there are many regional and seasonal differences that may be somewhat difficult to determine while people are constantly bragging how great it is. Heck, just look at the differences in the weather at the lake versus those often found in the greater Guadalajara area. A few years back, I spent a bunch of time planning an August trip that included a number of days in Chiapas. The best thing I ever did was to listen to Brigitte who not only advised that it was the time for severe rains but also the time for washed out highways and flooding. In all my planning, I certainly hadn't run across such sage advice!
