mugger defense
is it alright to carry a knife to defend yourself against a mugger who wants your money?
If you use it and cut the mugger, I guess that you may have to pay for the mugger's medical expenses.
If you use it and you stabbed the mugger and he dies then I suspect that you may have to pay damages to his family and face murder charges in court.
Is it alright for a walker who is paranoid about the possibility of being mugged to carry a knife or do you carry something like pepper spray?

Re: mugger defense
You would, to be safe, have to kill the mugger really, really dead, and dispose of the body or escape unseen and without leaving any of your DNA at the scene; probably to someplace like Afghanistan.
You have to be kidding! Carrying a weapon in Mexico????

My resistance would be limited to a walking stick and yelling loud.

If I was worried enough about my safety that I considered carrying a weapon I would likely move. If I was that worried no matter where I considered living I would seek help in discovering why.

Well actually you can carry a folding blade with a maximum blade length of 4 inches.
DNA testing for the murder of a dirtbag in Mexico.........jajajajajajaja. Since they only solve about 1% of the murders in this country I would think as long as there are no actual witnesses it would be a cold day in hell before they knock on your door.

To be taught personal defense methods that do not involve knives or illegal weapons would be best, pm me if you want lessons.

Re: mugger defense
Wouldn't it be better to not carry more at one time than you can afford to lose, and if someone demands it, throw your cash in one direction and take off in the opposite one? Would you really want to get into a knife fight with some low life over 500 pesos?

Re: mugger defense
Totally agree!! In many situations they would take your knife away and use it on you.

I don't want a physical encounter with anyone unless I have a baseball bat in my hands.

Re: mugger defense
I knew a truly bad ass EME guy in Los Angeles,he told me that when he got mugged once, the mugger who had a knife told him,"it ain't worth it",he agreed and handed over his money.
I can't imagine a retiree getting into it with a mugger, just give them your money.

Re: mugger defense
My problem with being mugged is that in addition to having money I have a highly customized smartphone that I wouldn't want to lose.

I've carried a baseball bat in my car since I was a teenager. And now I have one by my bed along with wasp spray in both places.

There are bigger problems with getting mugged than losing your smartphone!

Yeah, but is it worth your life or a serious injury,at your age do you think that you're up to taking on an armed mugger?papa chango wrote:My problem with being mugged is that in addition to having money I have a highly customized smartphone that I wouldn't want to lose.

Re: mugger defense
Muggers tend to be young and many are looking for money for their next fix. Do you want to get into hand-to-hand combat with one of them?
They say never pull out a weapon you are not 100% committed to using. Once you pull out that knife you are not in control of what will happen. Are you prepared to take the life of another human being over a smart phone?

Re: mugger defense
Maybe keep your smart phone in a hidden location unless you are using it? Like an under the shirt document holder. Then hand them your $$ and no one is wiser.

Re: mugger defense
If you throw the cash he'll go for it and you can take your smartphone with you. None of that is worth risking your life. Just let it go.

Let me see...
Loss of smart phone or loss of life? What is the smartest choice?

Thanks for the laugh! The thought of Monty Pythons Granny Gang just sprang to mind. The clip is funny. The likely result of someone in their 70s or 80s defending themselves from a street kid is not. Yeah, we're pretty tough, but only between the ears.

Love Monty. There is the fact that, as we grow older, our minds aren't necessarily in sync with the condition of our bodies.
A man of 70 may still have the ego of his days as an army Ranger, when Gawd help anyone who messed with him, but a healthy 18 year old punk can probably do him in at this point, especially with a knife or other weapon. I'm not about to risk my life or health trying to protect the contents of my wallet. As a woman, I have no delusions about my relative strength to a robber. In other words, folks.....most of us aren't what we used to be, and even if we were, being sensible is a lot better than being dead or damaged.

Good point Gringal,I know you're familiar with San Pedro where I grew up,it's a tough town and I didn't mind mixing it up on occasion, these days I try to avoid that type of encounter..

Good quote, and do I ever remember San Pedro! I grew up in quieter Glendale, which might as well have been someplace in the midwest. In contrast, there were carjackings at the intersection downtown during my time in S.P. Plus the riots.
I also support Texus secession.

You might want to rethink that.
