what would you do
If the police station put a flood light that shines onto your property?

Well, we do have curtians ... but it's a flood ligth ... looks like daylight when it's on. I'll have to get black out drapes for the bedroom windows, I guess. I know they want to light up the street, but does it have to shine right into our house? Our renters are not happy.

There does exist a kind of circular shield that goes around outdoor lights and cuts out any light that does not shine straight down.
If you acquired one all that would be left is to find someone willing to "bell the cat."
On the other hand... a little mordida might go a long way. Lizzy

We had a similar condition to yours. Put up black-out -drapes (pretty pricey) that worked great but the plus is they also helped with a noise issue. Not saying this is important to you but it was really nice for us. Kind of a win/ win, all for us.
P.S. We went one foot above (all the room we had ), 2 feet beyond the sides of the window frame and to the floor. Maybe over kill, just don’t know.

You can buy black out fabric at a reasonable price in Guadalajara on Manuel Acuna in Santa Teresita. There are fabric shops starting at Ave. Americas all along Manuel Acuna. I remember a friend bought black out fabric and made her own draped. Had someone put grommets in the top to go through the curtain poll so they were really easy to make. I think the fabric was under $5 US per meter - probably a little more now two years later.

My impression is, they would like to keep the renters (income) and get a little sleep for themselves. Love it or leave it is not always the best answer.

Maybe offer to pay to have a deflector placed on part of the light so as to create a shadow on your place but still light the street and front area but not your place, cost would be 100 or so pesos.

I walked over to the police station with a tray of home made cinnamon rolls and asked to speak to the chief of police. The chief very polite and sympathetic. Later that day the light was taken down and a less intrusive one was installed. Now the street is well lit and we don't have bright lights in our living spaces. Thanks for your input.

Re: what would you do
U must make good cinnamon rolls!!
I have a newly installed streetlight presenting the same problem... I wuz gonna make me a slingshot...
I thought that recomendation would fall on deaf ears... your problem being across from the police station and all...so I didn't say anything.
Now, I'm thinking I might halfta learn to bake.

put up some black out curtains. Much better to have your yard lit up, then to have it dark and shadowy. Think of it as free security.

Hey SplashingColor, nice move with the homemade food. Has worked for my wife for years with various service people. Can't believe we men are so vulnerable to a woman with food, or a woman without food in some cases. We're just easy & cheap too.

I don't think I would want to give up my privacy for what may well be just the perception of security; especially when you consider how many burglaries happen in broad daylight.
Besides, the proximity of the Po-leese Station would seem to be a pretty good deterrent. They're gonna protect their investment in possible future good-as-sin-ammon buns... yum! Lizzy
