Puerta de Hierro Hospital / verified use of docs researched for Life Planning in Jalisco publication

Checking into a hospital. Well, one issue is the liability for signing in for someone.

Another issue is making decisions for someone. If you are a spouse or a family member, you likely will be able to make decisions on behalf of the person who cannot speak for themselves. Mexico is still a traditional society and that's how many decisions are made.

However, if you are a same sex couple, or single and have a friend, or friends, acting on your behalf, your decision may or may not be recognized and the doctor or hospital will make the decision.

To get around these and many other issues, using a durable power of attorney for medical decisions from the US, for example, apostilled and legally translated is one option. Another option is using a durable power of attorney for medical decisions from another Mexican state since a 'durable' power of attorney is not available in the State of Jalisco.

Recently, I sent the materials from Life Planning in Jalisco (www.lifeplanninginjalisco.wordpress.com) to Puerta de Hierro Hospital, with a request that the information be reviewed by their legal counsel.

Acosta & Associates verified in writing that durable powers of attorney, apostilled and legally translated from the US were legally recognized and usable at Puerta de Hierro.

They also verified that durable powers of attorney for medical decisions from other Mexican states were legally recognized and useable at Puerta de Hierro Hospital.

These documents are separate from the Mexican federal end-of-life legislation which is only good if the person is diagnosed terminal, with an expected less than 6 months to live.
