Credit Card Question Empty Credit Card Question

Post by Carry Bean Mon May 20, 2019 10:15 am

My American Express card is bugging me to give my cell number. Of course, the only cell I have is Mexican. I know some cards don’t like it and may cancel you if they discover you live out of the country but I’m not sure how strict Amex is. Any experience with this?

You can always tell 'em you don't have a cell phone..the nosy buggers.

Alternatively, there is at least one U.S. financial institution offering checking and savings accounts that will provide you with a credit card, knowing full well that you live in Mexico.  Such an institution caters to government employees outside the country as well as expats. Your funds are insured and you needn't be in the states to set up an account.
If you want specific information, PM me.

I would not give them your mx cell number. You can give them magic jack or get a U.S Text Now number for free.

Credit Card Question Empty Re: Credit Card Question

Too late. Told them the only mobile phone I had was the one I used at “my home in Mexico” where I spend part of the year. No issues and
I asked him to note that charges in Mexico were ok so
I wouldn’t have to call whenever I visited Mexico.

Credit Card Question Empty Re: Credit Card Question

Credit cards are of no value here in Mexico. We find our debit cards attached to our U.S. and Mexican banks to be useful for all transactions including hotel reservations or on line ordering for anything in any amount. Get over credit cards and anxiety over use of Mexican banks. However, do use caution in purchasing anything of significant value in Mexico or Florida.

Credit Card Question Empty Re: Credit Card Question

I have a Mexican Bank account (Actinver) and am very happy with it. That said, I never need to use their (my) Mexican Debit card, because, I have no trouble using my Bank of America Visa credit card.

Being up north 3 months per year, makes it easy to have an active BofA bank account with credit and debit cards.

I use my Canadian Mastercard for everything that I order online or don't have the cash for. I would never use it anywhere here other than the major retailers like WalMart, Home Depot, Best Buy etc.

Credit Card Question Empty Re: Credit Card Question

I use cc’s online for purchases and rarely here.  My MasterCard has a high maximum of  $20,000.00 so I really want no issues with that card because it might be necessary for a medical emergency.
I prefer to pay cash and have no interest in getting a Mexican credit card at all.  The AMEX is one I’ve had since the ‘70’s but I don’t care to lose it, just in case.
