Yep, I knew guys doing it over 40 years ago. Very expensive set up back in those days. When it hit the street they would give it exotic names like Maui Waui, Sin semilla, Acapulco gold, Pineapple Express, etc. but it was all coming out of local hydroponic lab's. Those were the days when the Hells Angles were ruling the roost. Most of it was shipped south to the US and traded for cocaine.

Now that we can grow pot in areas bigger than a closet with cannabis legalization, our understanding of cultivating weed is increasing in leaps and bounds. I have the 10th legal growing license in WA state and have been growing both indoor and outdoor on a large scale for over 5 years now. What we have found is that growing outside, even close to the 45th parallel here, is that cannabis grown outside is more potent than the same strain grown indoors. We know that with THC/CBD testing. Not only is it more potent, sometimes by as much as 5-10% more, production is of course much greater outdoors. A plant grown outdoors in our eastern WA climate in a normal season will produce upwards of 4-7 lbs of dense tight sticky bud. Indoors in the same period you would be lucky to get 1lb of much looser bud per plant. Many people prefer the appearance of indoor bud over outdoor grown because plants grown outside have a browner color than indoor bud as a result of the sun and the trichomes are more predominant. Greenhouse flower has better appearance than flower grown directly in the sun and is almost as potent as plants grown directly in the sun but nonetheless there are many people that still think indoor is best. I personally would prefer outdoor sungrown any day but again that is because I can see the comparison first hand. Outdoor grown is much easier and usually there is no need for pesticide on outdoor plants if grown properly. Indoor growing is often more difficult and unless you have sterile clean sealed rooms that you grow in, pesticide in some form is often necessary:/

The amount of information that we are finally really able to glean about growing cannabis is just amazing now that we can do it on this scale and in the full light of day. If or when we have full legalization in the US we can do the kind of research that this amazing plant really deserves not only in best growing practices but in medical research as well:-)
