Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)

Saw this at Costco this week. It may be an idea to have this available at LCS, The American Legion and any other location that groups congregate at. Red Cross would benefit from this as well.

Cruz Roja has a defibrillator/monitor LifePack 10 and a few AEDs. Don't know if they are all operational though . . .

This is a good idea and something to put some effort behind, I think. Would be good, additionally, to find a place open longer hours or with longer access times and somebody usually in attendance. Maybe the churches? Conflict of interest?

Of course accompanying CPR is mandatory as well as rapid Advanced Life Support for follow up in order to have a successful outcome.

Problem being you also need someone around who knows when and how to use it, then all the additional stuff mentioned above.

The time issue is a concern, since Cruz Roja has to get to you, whereas the unit available at the point of need is already there. They are available with automated verbal commands.

That is true and that is the dilemma. How do you put them everywhere? If you're worried about yourself, you can buy one for your house. And your neighbors.

But how does a novice know if someone drops it is a heart attack. I would have no idea.

You don't know and you don't need to know.

If a person drops in front of you, your job is to determine if they have a pulse or not. If they have no pulse start CPR. If there is an AED, apply the pads the machine will do the rest. Call 911 or whatever # will get paramedics there rapidly. Meantime, continue CPR.

Maybe we should have a CPR class swarm.

I wouldn't even be able to tell if someone had a pulse or not. I could probably tell if they were breathing or not......lol. Would using this device on someone who was passed out but not having a heart attack cause any damage??

Danger from unneeded defibrillation?
AEDs provide step-by-step visual and voice prompts to allow even untrained bystanders to use the device correctly, and include a safety feature that prevents unneeded shocks.

No, because the machine is able to detect tthe heart rhythm and it won't deliver a shock unless it's appropriate. It IS dangerous, however, to do CPR on a person whose heart is fine. Check for a pulse before doing CPR.
