Hotel Recommendation - San Miguel de Allende
San Miguel de Allende has a reputation for having expensive hotels or some very basic less expensive hotels. We stumbled on the Best Western Hotel Monteverde Express back in 2009 and stayed there one night. This trip, we booked in for three nights on a "manager's special" of three nights for the price of two. That worked out to $56.75USD/night booked directly through the Best Western International website:

This hotel is a converted old hacienda and has some typical shortcomings of this style of hotel such as what we would call marginal room lighting and ventilation issues. However, we can deal with those issues and all we ask for is a clean room that we sleep in and a decent location. This hotel is about a five or six block walk up to the plaza that takes maybe five minutes. Walking back to the hotel is easy since you are walking downhill, which tends to settle dinner a bit before you arrive back at the hotel. Wireless Internet and most important, a secure parking lot on the hotel grounds and within the walls. Breakfast is served in their breakfast area or in the courtyard. The staff is attentive and we find it a great place to stay!
