The Mexican Senate was required to pass a bill which legalizes Cannabis by December 15. Today. I don't see any media coverage. Anyone else with any details?

There are definetely some technical problems The one that gets me is that you are allowed to keep up to 1 ounce in your home. You are allowed to grow 6 plants, and many of today's superstrains, can grow up to 2 lbs a harvest, 192 ounces. Ok, I,ll take 1 ounce of the best please. Now I have 191 ounces left. Top shelf specialty strains, grown in the tropical sun, retail for about $5 a gram in places like Denver, lets say. With 28 grams per ounce, 5,348 grams. At $5 a gram (at what police used to call street value) , that gives my big pile of stinky flowers, a value of $26,740. Oh well, I guess I just have to burn it all in the fireplace, close the flue to make the smoke go in the house, and a have the most wonderful house party of the century!

You are correct. Checked across 3 legal dispensaries, two popular strains, White Widow and Bubba Kush, all sold out.

In my area most busts were for growing not for selling. The police were always very proud of the "street value" of the crops that they destroyed with each one being bigger than the one before. The only problem was they cited manicured prices for unmanicured plants. All those wet roots, stalks, leaves, etc. really add up.

Certain classes of folks in mexico just hate pot and potheads. The politicos are one such group of people. Also I expect the cartels to be involved in keeping the market they developed.  I am not sure it will happen at all.  Even AMLO changed his mind once elected. This is culture and politics pure and simple.

Well I suppose the cartels can get into large "legal" grow ops.

Yep, the "street value" was not only for unmanicured, it was as if that's what the grower would get if they sold it by the joint.
And it gave the impression that it was easy money, which it isn't. A lot of work goes into tending those plants, watering, fertilizing, dealing with spider mites, etc, etc. It's not like you just stick some clones in the soil and come back and harvest it a few months later.

That is correct, and interesting. The Mexicans pushing forward all three of the legal cases were all, well educated, well employed, young professionals. They most likely spent some time, studying, or whatever, NOB or Europe where cannabis use is widespread and a part of university culture. They developed a taste for the more exotic strains, rather than the dirty cartel stuff, full of seeds and leaves that they sell on the plazas. So they decided to grow these strains in closets, grow tents, etc. Some got caught, but their defence was a right to happiness, under the Constitution, and they prevailed. The government was forced to make this change. At the same time, many recognised the commercial opportunities to sell to tourists. Also at the same time, the cartel growers developed a taste for the premium strains and began importing them from the US, and flew all over the world buying seeds. I once saw a cannibis themed beach party, almost all wealthy 30 somethings, burning up at least $10,000 of exotic strains (smells recognised from a mispent youth).
On the other hand, some Mexicans have only encountered low income construction workers smoking what smells like donkey droppings. The wealthier ones can at least afford a 2 liter Coca Cola, or a balleno of beer.

That's basically what happened in Canada. When they first legalized it for medical use, and the govt. set up medical marijuana grow-ops, a lot of the growers that got those contracts were those who had been growing it illegally forever, because they were the ones who had the expertise to grow it successfully.

When in actuality, most of them could not meet the stringent tender demands provided by Health Canada, and so once again big money was the ultimate winner. In 2009, there was only a signle licensee, somewhere in Saskatchewan.

A friend of ours is a legal pot grower and seller in Cali. Now when Nevada opened up he wanted to expand. The bill for paper and copy fees was 40,000 dollars. This is designed to keep out all the little people so only the big guys can get into the market.

Makes sense in our corporate world doesn't it.
