Back to Texas and weather....  I just drove from Baton Rouge LA up into that state half way on I49 Saturday. There was snow in the fields/woods starting out... rice patties were frozen. DEEP LouisianA!

Then I had to get off I49 at Alexandria because the elevated portion was closed and going up towards Shreveport La looked like a disaster to attempt according to the state roads website.

So headed west on 2-lane roads into East Texas. YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE how much snow/now turned to ice was everywhere. Roads only passable because there were two 'dry' lanes where the tires go but 1-2' of ice in between lanes etc. Slow going. Towns with either NO water or in a boil-water edict. At least there was electricity.  interstate 20 from Monroe La to well into east Texas either closed or massive slow-downs.

I asked a young lady at a gas station in east Texas if she had ever seen it like this before and she said, "well, I'm 30+ and I've never seen it like this!" Frozen water/no water and boil water as far north as the Oklahoma border... maybe even farther I just didn't go that way any farther.

Temps in the 50s as I came across the Texas panhandle this (Sunday) afternoon.

Yes, Mother Nature shows no political preference. BUT, I did not see the Gov. of California blaming the problem entirely on the use of renewable energy sources as the Texas gov was doing on Fox News.

Yes, they did but it certainly wasn't as extreme or as extended as what happened in Texas. The governor of California also had a very different attitude about it...

There's no way to sugar coat what happened in Texas and parts of Louisiana and Oklahoma. One has to understand and not lose sight of the fact that it was an 'historic' event. Having said that, "they" have been living with known (to some at least!) risks and short cuts in the name of economics of power. Those risks just bit them in the butt and millions of people are now suffering and a number of them are dead. I could not help but notice that, around Austin... the most liberal/Democratic portion of the state.... three power providers chose to NOT take those design risks and their power stayed mostly on during the whole event. And no one paid $10,000 for a few days electric power. Says something, doesn't it!

I keep coming back to the fact that the power companies were warned three weeks in advance of what was going to happen. The one thing that they could have done was to warn their customers in advance and they didn't. That's disgraceful and neglectful... and borders on negligent homicide.

Saw an interview with the master chief of the El Paso powerplant, which is just off the Texas grid. In 2001 when this happened the last time they went all out with preventative measures: the latest tech for insulation and control, and they suffered none of these problems this time. He wasn't gloating on camera at all, but I bet he was in the back of his mind.
