We decided to take on a house sitting gig for a couple of reasons. We get to experience a different community lakeside and there is a pool included in the deal. They needed to attend to a medical procedure that would require a couple of months in the states.

The deal was rather casual and there no discussion of who would pay for what other than them leaving some pesos to pay the gardener, maid and pet food. Our responsibilities include caring for their two dogs and 4 cats, watering the lawn and plants, and minor pool maintenance. It's easy work that takes us about 6 hours a week.

As we have never done this before and I'm guessing they haven't either, my question is: What is considered fair as to bill paying, i.e, gas, electric, cable t.v, etc.?

Thanks in advance for your advice. It is appreciated.

I would think that since you are helping them out that they should pay for all utilties, etc. You shouldn't be out of pocket for anything other than your food IMO.

I would think just the opposite of Bob, so to solve your issue, ask them who is responsible for what.

Although I appreciate that there are pros & cons to both... I have always leaned to " handshake deals ", as opposed to the legal contract... not that there is a problem with the written contract... just that I prefer the type of person that I am comfortable with, in a handshake agreement...

If you are looking after the property in a manner that shouldn't adversly effect the normal billin... leave it with the owners...

If you are bringing your laundry, washing your car in the driveway, and throwing pool parties.... then you should spring for the electricity and hot water...

Also... If when you take over, there are cold cervezas in the fridge... it's polite ta leave a couple for when the others arrive back home... :) yer welcome!!

Thanks for sharing suggestions, it is much appreciated. We will offer to pay the maid, buy our own food, not make long distance calls, drink their soda pop or alcohol or incur any added expenses while fulfilling our end of the bargain. I will suggest they pay their household expenses such as utilities, cable etc.. That seems fair.

Oh, and if there is ever a next time we will get the details straight before we make the deal.

Seems perfectly fair to me. I'm sure they will be quite agreeable to the deal. Enjoy the place.

As an end note; e-mailed the owners, they are quite pleased with the arrangement and we are too. Thanks!
