Baja Route

Has anyone on this forum driven the Baja Route from San Diego to La Paz and then taken the ferry across the Sea of Cortez (12 hours) to Mazatlan? Also how is the drive from Mazatlan to Ajijic?

Mazatlan to Ajijic is easy 6 to 7 hours counting a break and gas stop. Note
not a great deal of Pemex stations after Tepic going south on 15D Cuota.
Very hilly road between Tepic and the Tequila area. Drive Carefully if you
are not use to curves and hills, no shoulders watch for broken trucks in
the hill areas.

I did that Baja run from Seattle but in 2005. I don't imagine they have improved the Baja road a whole lot but maybe a few bridges. Taking my time I made La Paz in 3 days. Hotel for two days to look around, got my ticket and auto permit the day before. I went to Topolobampo rather than Mazatlan. Ferry is not cheap

Since you are also a member on MexConnect, I would suggest doing a search over there. There have been numerous conversations through the years on that particular route and you may find some good info.

The tricky part with the ferry is what time of day it drops you off. The Topo ferry arrives close to midnight so I didn't go far. The Mazatlan ferry arrives about 10am but it might be noon before you can hit the highway

I've driven the Baja just about yearly from 1984 up to 2007. It's only a 1000 miles but always seems to take longer than one thinks it should. I would usually end up doing the first night, or 3, in Ensenada, just because, then off to San Quintin, Guerrero Negro, Mulege, then finally Cabo. If your going to do the Baja give me a shout and I'll fill in the blanks with places to stay and other things that might be of interest.
