Speaking of Spanish

I learned a new Spanish word today Candace announced after dinner. "Alfredo! It means outside." (Living in Mexico is never dull.)

Can't get any better without trying it out. Very cute!

Well, there definitely are some classics. "Chile", "Huevos", "Leche" at an inappropriate time...

If I'm not mistaken, the term in English "No way" means something like "Hell no" in Spanish. So Lizzy, is I mistaken or what?

In Spanish, Hell is 'infierno', except in the movies where the CC usually uses 'diablos'. and that doesn't help very much.

One of my Mexican friends in the states once told me the word was 'whey' and that was slang for bulls balls. He said that it was used to add emphasis to what ever was being said (not in polite company). I know the construction guys used it frequently while working on our house down here as I was listening and trying to learn Spanish. I have since given up learning Spanish and now suspect my friend in the states was bull shiting me. (Good thing I'm too old to go back up there and get my ass kicked)

In Spanish there's 'huye' which means to escape or flee and 'huelle' which means tread or trample. I think there are forms of that word that mean 'print' as in footprint or fingerprint 'huelle digital', but bull balls? Who knows, your friend could just have been having you on, or maybe it's coloquial to a different part of Mexico. Lizzy

Testiculos del toro to get technically correct. If you ask a fella "¿Tiene huevos?" it means "Got balls?"... so,must be....drum roll... "¿Hay huevos, el toro?" Does the bull have balls? L

Huevos is also eggs, No? So huevos is a slang for balls?

It is in Mexicali, one of the hottest places on this planet. Juan smiled as he drove, pointing to the quarts of beer jammed between our legs saying, "Mexicali is famous for having the coldest eggs in Mexico."

It's only slang for balls if you ask a man, do you have balls? "¿ TIENE huevos? That's why in the restaurant you ask, Are there any eggs? "¿HAY huevos?"

On the subject of balls...there's my constant mistake...the difference between cajones and cojones. One refers to "balls" and the other to drawers in a dresser and I always, always get it wrong and then everyone breaks up into gales of laughter. Ummmm cojones =balls and cajones = dresser drawers....correct? or am I totally screwed up?
We have a friend here who ordered "salata" thinking he meant salad...he was told it meant he just ordered "pussy"...after the waitress laughed until tears ran down her face.

Ferret ~ "Cojones" has two O's, like two balls. "Cajones" Has an A, like "drawer". Does that help any?
I have trouble with "estaba" and "estara". I could never remember which is past tense and which is future. I have to refer to the B in "estaba", as in back. Lizzy

So Demonio, any insights on the term 'whey' pronounced 'way' in English. I still hear it used frequently at the end of sentances.

Lizzy, never make fun of the way it's hanging...some guys are REAL sensitive about that.
The future is usually the infinitive + the endings but I don't talk that way even in English...I usually cheat and say I am going to go, to do, to see, to whatever...vamos a ver.
Demonio, I'm glad that I'm learning Spanish...at least the words have a different spelling AND pronunciation even if they are similar. Stupid English...to, too, two...your, you're...all pronounced exactly the same...where's the logic in that?

Somehow I don't think logic had a whole lot to do with it.

Sorry Lizzy, I don't know which irregular verbs you are referring to. I do just about everything in an irregular way and I certainly don't speak perfect Spanish...on the other hand, I sure do have a lot of fun speaking it.

Just when you think you have it figured out, they throw the irregular verbs in there and the rules out the window. Lizzy
