Now, Dawg has had the privilege of having resided in many parts of France over a number of years and having have married into a French family with residences all over that splendid country and, while french fried potatoes are an authentic culinary specialty of that country (even though they originated in Belgium), Dawg has no recollection of ever having even heard of "French Fried Onion Rings" in France and, actually, the best fried onion rings (properly pronounced "rangs") are served up at Billy Bob´s Country Roadhouse and Skating Rink in Luverne, Alabama. Served only with authentic Heinz Ketchup.

As an aside, Dawg should point out that fried onion rings in Paris, if served, accompany grilled entrecote and come with a side of bearnaise sauce. Ask for that in Luverne and they´ll lynch yo ass on the spot without giving you an opportunity to call mama back in Spokane.

Onion Rings are supposedly an invention of the United States:

"History

The exact origins of the onion ring are unknown, but in 1933 a recipe for deep-fried onion rings that are dipped in milk then dredged in flour appeared in a Crisco advertisement in The New York Times Magazine.[1]

A recipe for French Fried Onions may have appeared in the Middletown, NY Daily Times on 13 January 1910. It does not claim to be the originator of the recipe.[2]

One claimant to the invention of the onion ring is the Pig Stand restaurant chain, founded in Oak Cliff, Texas, in the early 1920s. The once-thriving chain, whose heyday in the 1940s saw over 100 locations across the United States, also claims to be the originator of Texas toast.[3]"

The Score does 'em. Why are they sometimes called "French-fried?" In the South (Dawg help me out here) "Fried" anything means "deep-fried," same way potatoes, onion rings, and shrimp are "fried."

To me, "Fried" anything means "deep-fried," same way potatoes, onion rings, and shrimp are "fried." may be painting with too broad a brush? A few examples of fried foods which are not deep-fried that come to mind: fried eggs, pan fried chicken, pan fried steak, potato slices, zucchini, fried rice, etc.

"French fries (American English, with "French" often capitalized[1]), or chips, fries,[2] or French-fried potatoes are batons of deep-fried potato.[3] North Americans refer to any elongated pieces of fried potatoes as fries, while in the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand, long, thinly cut slices of fried potatoes are often called fries to distinguish them from the more thickly cut strips called chips.[4] French fries are known as frites, patates frites or pommes frites in French, a name which is also used in many non-French-speaking areas, and have names that mean "fried potatoes" or "French potatoes" in others."

Personally, I prefer Onion Rings coated in a beer & tempura batter and cooked in a wok.

That's how we make them at our house, served with Heinz Ketchup of course.Sliced camote is also good that way but without the ketchup.

Not big on using ketchup but Wasabi laced mayo or ranch dressing; or Japanese Shoyu w/Wasabi happen to be my personal favorites. Also have been known to apply Malt Vinegar.

Dawg loves Terminal 1 at GDL which has a Burger King and Krispy Kream side-by-side next to a bar with fine Herradura Blanco Tequila. Dawg would rather see any traveler off from GDL than Mexico City where I´ll on my way to Paris soon enough. There is not even one Burger King or Krispy Kream at Mexico City or Paris that Dawg has been able to find and every time I fly there the cops are blowing up suitcases. If it werern´t for the fact that Fat Dawg would be dining like a king in Paris once I got there, I would fly to Montgomery and eat cheese grits. As an airport, CDL sucks but Dawg does not have to stay there more than 12 minutes and I can handle that.

Don’t know about here but “Outback Steakhouse” in the US has a thing called a “blooming onion” that’s pretty good and very similar.

Outbacks Blooming Onion is the "absolute" worst thing you can eat in terms of high fat. I will never eat it again even though it tastes soooo good.
