Pixies on the web board? Empty Pixies on the web board?

Post by gringal Mon Apr 23, 2012 2:48 pm

Hey Boss: As of today, the top headings are double printing and there are little red "newest post" on the threads. New feature or what's happening?

Say what? While your description is somewhat confusing to me, I am not seeing any new changes today. Maybe it is your Yahoo messing with you?

Gringal

Try rebooting your computer and check the video connections.

Okay. I shut it down, rebooted and it's the same. May have something to do with updating Avast earlier. It tried to make Google Chrome my default browser, which I shut off. Strange. It's not affecting any other website I visit. I'll dump this one on my resident techie since it's nothing CBob did, apparently. Thanks anyway, Zed.

Very strange indeed Gringal. If you have another web browser try that and
see if it does the same thing. Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Opera, and
Firefox are the names of the top PC web browser.

I have Firefox. That Avast anti virus thing is very sneaky. You have to yell NO at many points along the way.
The very peculiar point is that it only does it on this site.

Thats why I wanted to see if it would do it on Chrome or IE for example. Does anyone here use Firefox and have the same problem
as Gringal? It would be nice to see it do the same thing on another firefox browser.

Topic moved to "Interesting event" and yes Avast and Chrome did the same
thing as Firefox and Avast.

Yep, I have Firefox; it is showing double. HomeHome CalendarCalendar WeatherWeather. However, Chrome is not exhibiting this, nor is IE9.

It's doubtful that a video driver would do this, since it's happening on more than one person's computer. It is some kind of display problem with Firefox. It doesn not happen in Firefox's Safe Mode (hold down SHIFT key while starting Firefox), so it must be an add-on of some type.

Ah. Company in my trouble. I'm running a full scan to see if there be pixies, but who knows. This has happened before, on my old computer. Then, it just went away until this time around.
If you figure it out..........please share. It's kind of a PITA.

Turns out on mine it is the Do Not Track Plus Addon, which is used to prevent websites from gathering your information for advertising purposes. I disabled it and the menu is now okay.

And the winner is HelperGuy!!

Gringal try bringing it up in safe mode like helperguy described. If it comes
up normal it is an addon like he said. Disable them until you find it. You
might see if the offending addon has an update to fix it but not that many
people run firefox so they might not know.

I added that on the advice of a friend........so looks like it's more trouble than it may be worth. However, why do you suppose it only creates strangeness on this web board? All others are operating normally.

The first bug was found by a brilliant lady computer scientist who later became an admiral. One of the mechanical computers stopped working correctly and she finally opened up the
computer and low and behold a bug was in the works thus the term bug originated. You may see the computer and bug in the basement of the Smithsonian. A computer bug can be
so specific to one situation and this one very specific to Firefox and your selected website. You might see if Firefox has a patch or send Avast, addon creator an email and see if they have a fix if you like the addon and want to continue using it.

Name the admiral? I can't remember. Grace???

Grace Harper, but she did not become an Admiral until she retired. She invented the Cobol programming language.

Pixies on the web board? Empty Re: Pixies on the web board?

In the world of computer repair, one quickly learns that being able to fix something is way more important than trying to figure out what happened. That only leads to gnashing of teeth and pulling of hair. As Zedinmexico points out, this bug is just an occlusion of factors that could be from any source: Windows, DoNotTrackPlus, and who-knows-what all. they've interacted in a weird way.

However, if you don't mind the double text on that one page only, the addon is a good tool.

Thanks. My conclusion, after seeing the number of things getting blocked by the DoNotTrackPlus, running SpyBot, a complete Avast scan and noting that only the heading here is affected, I'll have another cuppa coffee and ignore it.
