For the Ex-Oregonians
ESPN, The Magazine did a report on marijuana usage by student athletes and singled out the University of Oregon as one of the biggest culprits:
"... The Oregon football program provides an interesting case study on the impact — or lack thereof — of marijuana use among players. (AD Rob Mullens and (coach Chip) Kelly declined to comment for this story.)
“Nowhere is Oregon’s laissez-faire approach to marijuana more apparent than Eugene, the state’s counterculture and cannabis capital. “Business here is almost overwhelming,” says a student-dealer who lives on — no joke — High Street. “Here, everybody smokes.” Not surprisingly, The Princeton Review and High Times both have ranked the University of Oregon among the most pot-friendly schools.............

The classic statement on this came from former Oregon Duck running back when he stated: “It’s the weed capital of the world.” “Long dreads. Girls with hairy armpits. Where there’s hippies, there’s weed.”
He certainly nailed Eugene, Oreeegun!

Re: For the Ex-Oregonians
Just for the record.....We are talking about Eugene Oregon. Very liberal loose
place. I assure you if you want to light up a doobie in public in "The Dalles"
the cowboys will be glad to put you in jail. Oregon and Alaska years ago had
traffic ticket kind of grass tickets. They have regular laws these days and it
is up to the individual city on how hard they are. Eugene is pretty liberal.
Klamath Falls has many retired vets and probably would feed you overnight
for free if you wanted to play the public pot card. Yes a huge portion of
Oregonians in the Willamette Valley smoke pot but it is done much more in
private (where it should be) and the laws are not extremely hard but they are
not traffic tickets anymore. Easy way around all of this is to get an Oregon
Medical users card which allows you to grow a modest amount and use it
with your doctors approval. Very popular drug in Oregon for sleep problems.
Zed lived 35 years in Corvallis (Beavers) 40 miles NW of Eugene (Ducks)
Also you should know the two cities and university teams are good spirited
heavy duty rivalry type stuff. We call Eugene Berkenstock city and they call
Corvallis Cowvallis cause of our AG and Forest Schools. Down here many
more Duck Fans than Beaver Fans which I think is odd.

Re: For the Ex-Oregonians
Back in te 90s, Dawg worked for a couple of weeks a year in Eugene out of my home base in San Francisco. Thank God, normally in mid-summer when the sun shone on occasion. We called it Mayberry, U.S.A. At any time in this almost comical place, one expected to see Don Knotts step out of his cop car and ask, "Whatcha smokin there fellow." Not that there were any ramifications to whatever that might be. If one were arrested for any miscreant behavior, one simply looked up the name of Atticus Finch in the telephone directory for counsel. I swear to God, the biggest danger strolling about that town was that one would trip over a white picket fence after having had too much to drink in a trucker´s bar in nearby Springfield which was the butt of most local jokes.
This was the kind of place in the 90s where people actually ate bean sprout sandwiches with dark beer and went around saying "How yew doin´to anybody and everybody including those who had just been ejected from the most recent freight train to Portland after a three week ride from Tapachula.
One had to be spaced out to stay there more than a couple of weeks but it was not an unattractive place in the dry season and had a certain charm if lack of depth.
And, who would play for a team called "The Ducks" if they had any alternatives?

Coach Chip Kelly said, "We wouldn't be 34-6 if they were all smoking."

I had forgot that one. LOL
Eugene is more Liberal. In Corvallis we pretend to be more liberal than we actually are.

Re: For the Ex-Oregonians
At the Pearly Gates St. Peter asked the man where he went to college. "Oregon" the man replied. "Did you get your Medical degree?" St. Peter asked. "Yes, I did" the man replied.
He asked the next in line where he went to school. "Stanford" he replied. "Did you get your Physics degree?" Yes, I did" he said.
He asked the next man the same question. "Oregon State" the man replied. "Did you get your deer?" asked St. Peter.

Re: For the Ex-Oregonians
Back in the mid to late 80's, I was an Independent Rep with a number of lines of school pride products. The Duck Bookstore was one of my largest customers. Visiting the buyers was a real experience while shlepping my sample bags and cases down through the crowds of freaks on the sidewalks. There were a number of times that I thought that I had been transported back to the 60's and landed in Berkeley, CA.

One of Eugene's nicknames is Berkeley of the north.
