Agree 1,000%. Everyone thinks that if their maid or gardener tells them something it is true. It is not. Even those who have been here a number of years still post rumour and misinformation.

Instead of measuring rumors only by whether they are fact or fancy ( which may never be confirmed), why not also view the content of the rumors as "unobtrusive measures" of the mental/emotional state of the community ?

To belabor the point: when staff would bring "gossip/rumors" to me about co-workers, I learned to listen on two levels: (1) do I need to investigate the truth of the gossip/rumor; (2) what does this type of "gossip/rumor" tell me about the group's state of mind. When my gardener tells me there were x bodies dumped by the fish camps, I may or may not ever know if this is a fact, but I sure know he and his contacts are worried about violence in the community. The more rumors, the greater the level of worry. So, for me, rumors themselves are important information, whether they are ever substantiated.

Remember that the Mexican community does not trust the Police !
So where do they go?? They believe that many of the Police are involved.
If a person is kidnapped , the family is called & warned, not to go to the Police. So the will only talk with friends/family that they know they can trust.
I and my mexican wife (and family) know of many crimes that have not been on these webboards. In Chapala last year , in my neighborhood, there were three young men murdered that never reached the news.
The problem is much greater than I Know, or can comprehend. I cannot lock myself in a gated community & believe that the Mexican people "are full of rumors" , and ony this info is true , if verified in the Guad Reporter.
The Police are scared , as the general populace, and will say very little.
Think for a moment about these dangerous men. Don't imagine for a minute that they do want "the use" of a young girl, or a }person for hostage" from people that have money . Remember that most "gringos"
display wealth in the eyes of these people. WAKE UP !!

"They" sometimes are only considered to be narcos. But the "wannabe's". "Cholos", and other criminals(and Police accomplices) now have a much easier time to rob, murder, kidnap the "Gringos", due to
the general lawlessness prevailing. AND the investigating manpower is so
occupied(?) , that they now have a feeling that they will not be caught.
With the display of wealth of the "Gringos" we are becoming a more attractive target.
Because I have a Mexican wife, she is a target, because they feel all "Gringos" have access to cash. A friend of ours wife was held for six days, bfore a lot of cash was traded for her relaease.
As I said before, We only have knowledge of a small amount of the
"happenings"

The minute the gringos are targeted for kidnappings, robberies, extortion and murder this area will be a wasteland and the rest of Mexico will soon follow. All the expats and tourists will disappear. The US and others will pull out their investments and business. Would be a good time for Cuba to tear down the wall..........

Good post! And anyone on this forum who thinks that will happen is totally frigging brain dead. And Mexico's unemployment will hit 10 - 15%. And Lakeside will go from middle class Mexicans to a poor Mexican fishing village living in make shift shelters again because Lakeside Gringos provide the work and healthy contractors salaries here. More robberies and kidnappings of wealthy Mexicans.

you guys are greatly overblowing the role of the foreigners in Mexico. Many vibrant parts of Mexico have very little to do with that tourists of expats do. Get a life Mexico will survive one way or the other.

Any more news on the girl who might have been kidnapped at Soriana? Surely they got it all on security cameras.

If all the gringos leave, or most of them, the only other thing to hope for would be for the lake to almost dry up again, and then Chapala might be a pleasant place to visit again on Sunday.

I think you may underestimate the foreign investment in Mexico which extends way beyond tourists and expats.

brigitte - The tourist business is mexico's number 1 money source. They're always pissing and moaning when the Tourist industry is way off. Where does mexico thrive other than tourist and construction industries. Maybe in the manufacture of autos? This thread has turned to shit like many of others.
