Maria Sabina was the "spirit woman" of Mexico, who gave former Life magazine editor Gordon Wasson a dose of magic mushrooms in 1955. That moment is generally considered the introduction of magic mushrooms to Western culture and the beginning of the psychedelic revolution. She died in 1985 at the age of 91.
