Not sure where to put this but it's very interesting and includes possible uses...the desalinization of sea water really caught my eye.

There was an interesting show on desalinazation in the Middle East and the environemental problems caused by the residual salt so we may get fresh water cheaper from this process but someone should think of what to do with the salt before it gets dumped back into nature and destroys the environement. It is not a perfect world, one solution brings another problem..

Salt is an industrial product even if you sell it at a loss when you include transportation costs it can be used as Sea Salt for example to sell to the
yuppies in Napa. If you were not in a bay you could probably just pump it out into the ocean a couple of miles diluted down with sea water. Probably
better to find a use for the salt. Dealing with the salt is a part of the cost of the water.

Guerrero Negro, on the Baja Peninsula is the largest salt mine in the world http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guerrero_Negro

They extract Sodium Chloride (salt), Calcium Chloride (deicer) and everything left is usually called 'bitterns', mostly Magnesium Chloride (plus all the trace minerals, including gold). It is currently dumped back into the ocean in large quantities. This is thought to be safe - but it is a rotten shame they don't ship the liquid to the mainland - it is the best dust suppressor you can buy, makes a cement vastly superior to portland cement, and is actually good for your health ( 6 out of 10 people have a magnesium deficiency).
