I need an eye exam and hope I can get one locally.

Anyone have a referral, hopefully one they have used.

What cost am I looking at (please save the flames for asking about costs).

Dr. Vargas, ophthalmologist. Practices in Guadalajara, uses Puerto del Hierro Hospital for surgery. Comes into Ajijic Clinic on Tuesdays and possibly another day and has well equipped office there. Appointments made through the clinic. Speaks English.
600 pesos for office visit/exam as of last January.

Did surgery on my eyes last year. I can see the screen.

If there are no complicating issues, I use the eye clinic near the upsale tianguis in Riberas. $200.00 pesos.

This is the third Opthamologist that hubby has used in our two years in Ajijic...and she is the only one who finally got his long distance prescription correct.

I saw Dr. Pinto last year, had an eye exam and they charged me 400 pesos. No prescription was given.

I use Dr. Vargas. He does my annual check ups and has removed my cataracts. I recently had a virus(!) in my eye and he recognized my problem and correctly fixed it with meds he gave me.

Dra. Luz at LCS. Eye exam = no charge. Glasses = reasonable price.

HUH? I said LCS. Dra. Luz has been coming there weekly for years. She's an eye Doc from Guad. She'll write the Rx for you anything you need optics wise. Or, if you got some serious medical issue she'll refer you to a specialist. You can get your specs or contacts thru her or take the Rx anywhere you wish.

I think all you "want" is a vision examination and a prescription. What you need is to know WHY you need a new prescription. What's going on with your eyes etc....glaucoma? cataracts? retinal damage due to high blood pressure or diabetes?
Your choice...but don't be blind to the possibilities (pun intended).

Luz is an optician, not an ophthamologist. she does basic eye exams but is not a doctor. I have an annual eye exam with an eye doctor to be sure there is nothing wrong with my eyes. Her specialty is making glasses.

My wife recently had a proglem with her eye, she was seeing a shadow out of the corner of her right eye and went to see Dr Pinto. He referred her to a specialist in Guad as he said he didn't have the proper equipment. I called the specialist and he asked if we could come in first thing in the morning and after testing her he said she had a retina tear that required immediate surgery. He took the blood tests and all and the next morning he performed the surgery.
We were impressed by his care and professionalism, from what I understand he is one of the top eye doctors in Guad. So if you need a thorough eye exam I would recommed Dr. René Alejandro Santillán Lomas. His phone numbers are:

Dra. Luz is an optometrist (tests for glaucoma, can do a screening retinal exam, and can prescribe glasses) and an optician (fits glasses, repairs frames, sells new glasses) but is not an ophthalmologist whom you'd need if you have suspected or known eye disease. The large equipment needed for the exam is kept in her exam room at the rear of the LCS, so, yes, you can get your new Rx from her at no charge to you as she donates her exam time to the LCS, thus making her money only from selling the glasses. If you were to use her services and price the glasses comparing like quality to what you can get NOB and find that her prices are much higher, then people usually give her a donation for her time and take the Rx wherever they want to.

I recently got high end blended bifocal Varilux replacement lenses from her while keeping my same frames and the cost was $3600 pesos or $288 US at the time. My previous Varilux lenses in the US purchased in 2011 cost $315. I just visited my optician in the US last month to purchase a sunclip for these glasses. He examined the quality of the Guadalajara lab's lenses and commented that he'd not seen my type of thinner lens with that same quality done in the US in Varilux and was surprisingly impressed. I had actually expected to pay somewhat more than I had in the US as she had told me they would likely cost more than I was used to NOB. It's only my own experience but you never know when the price is going to be right here unless you delve into some research.

Yes, they are progressive bifocals.

If you go up to the U.S. or have a way to get stuff sent or brought down to you I'd recommend having one of the opthamologists already recommended do your eye exam and ordering your glasses online from these folks:

Make sure to get your PD (pupillary distance) measured. My wife and I have both ordered glasses twice from this outfit after reading a bunch of articles about them and about what a high-marging racket the eyeglass business is (it makes the razor business look low-margin). You can get state-of-the-art Varilux progressives and an excellent frame for less money than the lenses alone will cost you almost anywhere else. Quality is great.
